☯ Full Synopsis : "The unmaking of a hero Madhavan Pillai, a freedom fighter of renown in pre-independence years, now a penniless alcoholic, awaits an anonymous death, while his protege Ramettan helplessly witnesses the downfall of his idol. Just over two decades ago, Ramettan was a young college student in awe of the daring revolutionary who was everybodyýs hero...but today he buys Madhavan Pillai his daily hooch and makes futile rounds of the government secretariat trying to get his mentor five cents of landýhis dying wish. As the story unfolds, it is discovered that the same patch of land is coveted by somebody else who is closer to the Revenue Minister; the only thing that could make a difference is a personal request to the minister by the ailing freedom fighter, but despite Ramettanýs urgings Pillai refuses to bend and ask for a favour....Five Cents of Land, by one of Keralaýs most respected authors, takes an unsparing look at what we are left with when dreams die and romantic notions fail, and forces us into accepting the futility of convictions and the inevitability of compromise. ☯ Full Synopsis : "A new eight-hour event series based on Roots will be simulcast on the History Channel, Lifetime, and A&E over four consecutive nights beginning Memorial Day, May 30, 2016 When Roots was first published forty years ago, the book electrified the nation: it received a Pulitzer Prize and was a #1 New York Times bestseller for 22 weeks. The celebrated miniseries that followed a year later was a coast–to–coast event—over 130 million Americans watched some or all of the broadcast. In the four decades since then, the story of the young African slave Kunta Kinte and his descendants has lost none of its power to enthrall and provoke. Now, Roots once again bursts onto the national scene, and at a time when the race conversation has never been more charged. It is a book for the legions of earlier readers to revisit and for a new generation to discover. To quote from the introduction by Michael Eric Dyson: “Alex Haley's Roots is unquestionably one of the nation's seminal texts. It affected events far beyond its pages and was a literary North Star…. Each generation must make up its own mind about how it will navigate the treacherous waters of our nation's racial sin. And each generation must overcome our social ills through greater knowledge and decisive action. Roots is a stirring reminder that we can achieve these goals only if we look history squarely in the face.” The star– studded cast in this new event series includes Academy Award–winners Forest Whitaker and Anna Paquin, Laurence Fishburne, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Derek Luke, Grammy Award-winner Tip “T.I.” Harris, and Mekhi Phifer. Questlove of The Roots is the executive music producer for the miniseries's stirring soundtrack."Article| Alex Haley| Statement ..."

☯ Full Synopsis : "Perhaps the only novel to have been reprinted nearly every year for over a hundred years, Indulekha (1889) is widely held to be the first Malayalam novel. Often called an 'accidental' and 'flawed' work, at its core lies a love story. The setting of the novel is the Nair community of Kerala, which had for centuries practised polyandrous matriliny, a most unusual form of inheritance through the woman whom both property and authority flavoured. It gives us glimpses of prevalent social practices much debated amongst a people already under colonial pressure to change their ways of life. Written by a Nair, Indulekha is not a grandiose outpouring but the author's effort to achieve certain social goals: firstly, to create a novel much like those of the English authors he had read, and secondly, to illustrate Nair society at that time, both of which met with success. The novel influenced the deliberations of the Malabar Marriage Commission which it predated, and of which Chandum enon was a member. This novel will appeal to general readers interested in Indian writings in translation. Students of literature, history and culture, political and legal theory, and gender studies, will also find it useful."Article| Ōyyārattu Cantumēnōn| Statement ..."
