☯ Full Synopsis : "Richard Suart, heir to the great Gilbert and Sullivan singers of the past, has made the role of Ko-Ko, Lord High Executioner, his own. Over the last 20 years his topical version of the Little List song has become a focus of audience expectation and hilarity. In this book he looks back over the Lists that have raised such laughter at the Coliseum and at the history of this immensely malleable song, taking in previous performers such as George Grossmith, Martyn Green, Groucho Marx, Frankie Howerd, and Eric Idle—not to mention poets as varied as John Hollander and Tim Rice. Early U. S. reaction to The Mikado is explored, and documents shown include a very rare brochure from the early days of Fort Worth, a New York Times cartoon, and a superb Little List by John Hollander about Nixon, illustrated by David Levine. An entire chapter is devoted to performances of The Mikado in NYC on the day after 9/11."Article| Richard Suart| Statement ..."

☯ Full Synopsis : "This book examines social aspects of humour relating to the judiciary, judicial behaviour, and judicial work across different cultures and eras, identifying how traditionally recorded wit and humorous portrayals of judges reflect social attitudes to the judiciary over time. It contributes to cultural studies and social science/socio-legal studies of both humour and the role of emotions in the judiciary and in judging. It explores the surprisingly varied intersections between humour and the judiciary in several legal systems: judges as the target of humour; legal decisions regulating humour; the use of humour to manage aspects of judicial work and courtroom procedure; and judicial/legal figures and customs featuring in comic and satiric entertainment through the ages. Delving into the multi-layered connections between the seriousness of the work of the judiciary on the one hand, and the lightness of humour on the other hand, this fascinating collection will be of particular interest to scholars of the legal system, the criminal justice system, humour studies, and cultural studies."Article| Jessica Milner Davis| Statement ..."

☯ Full Synopsis : "Holmes and Watson are plunged into the secret underworld of 1925 London, where a serial killer of musical (gay) men is afoot. The killer has a little list, and Sherlock is on it. Why? And what have the Bloomsbury Group and the Diogenes Club got to do with anything? Thanks to Royal Jelly, Holmes is a fit 71-year-old, who has lost his interest in bees and returned to detecting. He's not quite as sharp as he used to be, but he's still pretty sharp, and a bit of a vigilante in his old age. He meets up with his colleague and friend, Dr. John Hamish Watson, a 72-year-old not-quite-so-fit-at-all twice-widower, who hankers after the good old days of derring-do. They are joined by their excitable new housekeeper at 221B Baker Street, the brilliant, buxom Miss Lily Hudson and are helped in their work by Jasper Lestrade of Scotland Yard, the ambitious, respectful son of the late George Lestrade."Article| John A. ☯ Full Synopsis : "The battle between religion and science, competing methods of knowing ourselves and our world, has been raging for many centuries. Now scientists themselves are looking at cognitive foundations of religion--and arriving at some surprising conclusions. Over the course of the past two decades, scholars have employed insights gleaned from cognitive science, evolutionary biology, and related disciplines to illuminate the study of religion. In Why Religion is Natural and Science Is Not, Robert N. McCauley, one of the founding fathers of the cognitive science of religion, argues that our minds are better suited to religious belief than to scientific inquiry. Drawing on the latest research and illustrating his argument with commonsense examples, McCauley argues that religion has existed for many thousands of years in every society because the kinds of explanations it provides are precisely the kinds that come naturally to human minds. Science, on the other hand, is a much more recent and rare development because it reaches radical conclusions and requires a kind of abstract thinking that only arises consistently under very specific social conditions. Religion makes intuitive sense to us, while science requires a lot of work. McCauley then draws out the larger implications of these findings. The naturalness of religion, he suggests, means that science poses no real threat to it, while the unnaturalness of science puts it in a surprisingly precarious position. Rigorously argued and elegantly written, this provocative book will appeal to anyone interested in the ongoing debate between religion and science, and in the nature and workings of the human mind."Article| Robert N.
