☯ Full Synopsis : "This textbook offers a clear and comprehensive introduction to analytical mechanics, one of the core components of undergraduate physics courses. The book starts with a thorough introduction into Lagrangian mechanics, detailing the d’Alembert principle, Hamilton’s principle and conservation laws. It continues with an in-depth explanation of Hamiltonian mechanics, illustrated by canonical and Legendre transformation, the generalization to quantum mechanics through Poisson brackets and all relevant variational principles. Finally, the Hamilton-Jacobi theory and the transition to wave mechanics are presented in detail. Ideally suited to undergraduate students with some grounding in classical mechanics, the book is enhanced throughout with learning features such as boxed inserts and chapter summaries, with key mathematical derivations highlighted to aid understanding. The text is supported by numerous worked examples and end of chapter problem sets. About the Theoretical Physics series Translated from the renowned and highly successful German editions, the eight volumes of this series cover the complete core curriculum of theoretical physics at undergraduate level. Each volume is self-contained and provides all the material necessary for the individual course topic. Numerous problems with detailed solutions support a deeper understanding. Wolfgang Nolting is famous for his refined didactical style and has been referred to as the "German Feynman" in reviews."Article| Wolfgang Nolting| Statement ..."

☯ Full Synopsis : "In the past decade the language and methods ofmodern differential geometry have been increasingly used in theoretical physics. What seemed extravagant when this book first appeared 12 years ago, as lecture notes, is now a commonplace. This fact has strengthened my belief that today students of theoretical physics have to learn that language-and the sooner the better. Afterall, they willbe the professors ofthe twenty-first century and it would be absurd if they were to teach then the mathematics of the nineteenth century. Thus for this new edition I did not change the mathematical language. Apart from correcting some mistakes I have only added a section on gauge theories. In the last decade it has become evident that these theories describe fundamental interactions, and on the classical level their structure is suffi cientlyclear to qualify them for the minimum amount ofknowledge required by a theoretician. It is with much regret that I had to refrain from in corporating the interesting developments in Kaluza-Klein theories and in cosmology, but I felt bound to my promise not to burden the students with theoretical speculations for which there is no experimental evidence. I am indebted to many people for suggestions concerning this volume. In particular, P. Aichelburg, H. Rumpf and H. Urbantke have contributed generously to corrections and improvements. Finally, I would like to thank Dr. 1. Dahl-Jensen for redoing some of the figures on the computer."Article| Walter Thirring| Statement ..."

☯ Full Synopsis : "These Lecture Notes provide an introduction to classical statistical mechanics. The first part presents classical results, mainly due to L. Boltzmann and J.W. Gibbs, about equilibrium statistical mechanics of continuous systems. Among the topics covered are: kinetic theory of gases, ergodic problem, Gibbsian formalism, derivation of thermodynamics, phase transitions and thermodynamic limit. The second part is devoted to an introduction to the study of classical spin systems with special emphasis on the Ising model. The material is presented in a way that is at once intuitive, systematic and mathematically rigorous. The theoretical part is supplemented with concrete examples and exercises."Article| Matteo Petrera| Statement ..."

☯ Full Synopsis : "The Institute for Theoretical and Experimental Physics (ITEP) is internationally recognized for achievements in various branches of theoretical physics. For many years, the seminars at ITEP have been among the main centers of scientific life in Moscow. This volume is a collection of articles by participants of the seminar on mathematical physics that has been held at ITEP since 1983. This is the second such collection; the first was published in the same series, AMS Translations, Series 2, vol. 191. The papers in the volume are devoted to several mathematical topics that strongly influenced modern theoretical physics. Among these topics are cohomology and representations of infinite Lie algebras and superalgebras, Hitchin and Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov-Bernard systems, and the theory of $D$-modules. The book is intended for graduate students and research mathematicians working in algebraic geometry, representation theory, and mathematical physics."Article| Jurij A. Neretin| Statement ..."

☯ Full Synopsis : "More than a generation of Gennan-speaking students around the world have worked their way to an understanding and appreciation of the power and beauty of modern theoretical physics - with mathematics, the most fundamental of sciences - using Walter Greiner's textbooks as their guide. The idea of developing a coherent, complete presentation of an entire field of science in a series of closely related textbooks is not a new one. Many older physicists remember with real pleasure their sense of adventure and discovery as they worked their ways through the classic series by Sommerfeld, by Planck and by Landau and Lifshitz. From the students' viewpoint, there are a great many obvious advantages to be gained through use of consistent notation, logical ordering of topics and coherence of presentation; beyond this, the complete coverage of the science provides a unique opportunity for the author to convey his personal enthusiasm and love for his subject. The present five volume set, Theoretical Physics, is in fact only that part of the complete set of textbooks developed by Greiner and his students that presents the quantum theory. I have long urged him to make the remaining volumes on classical mechanics and dynamics, on electromagnetism, on nuclear and particle physics, and on special topics available to an English-speaking audience as well, and we can hope for these companion volumes covering all of theoretical physics some time in the future."Article| Walter Greiner| Statement ..."
