☯ Full Synopsis : "The Routledge International Handbook of Innovation Education is the international reference work on innovation education and potentially opens an entirely new direction in education. The overall goal of the handbook is to address the question of how to develop innovators in general and how to develop the innovative potential of today’s young people with exceptional talents in science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM) disciplines in particular. Today many governments around the world are interested in the development of STEM innovators. This handbook provides the first and most comprehensive account available of what should be done in order to develop innovators and how to do it successfully. It includes chapters by leading specialists from around the world responsible for much of the current research in the fields of innovation, gifted education, scientific talent, science education, and high ability studies. Based on the latest research findings and expert opinion, this book goes beyond mere anecdotes to consider what science can tell us about the development of innovators. By enlisting chapters from innovation experts, educators, psychologists, policy makers, and researchers in the field of management The Routledge International Handbook of Innovation Education will allow all of these scholars to speak to each other about how to develop innovators via innovation education, including such issues as: the nature of innovation education, its basis, main components and content, its criteria and specificity in various domains and contexts, societal demands placed upon it. This ground-breaking and potentially field defining work will thus serve as the first authoritative resource on all aspects of theory, research, and practice of innovation education."Article| Larisa V. ☯ Full Synopsis : "How global biotechnology is redefining "life itself." In the age of global biotechnology, DNA can exist as biological material in a test tube, as a sequence in a computer database, and as economically valuable information in a patent. In The Global Genome, Eugene Thacker asks us to consider the relationship of these three entities and argues that—by their existence and their interrelationships—they are fundamentally redefining the notion of biological life itself. Biological science and the biotech industry are increasingly organized at a global level, in large part because of the use of the Internet in exchanging biological data. International genome sequencing efforts, genomic databases, the development of World Intellectual Property policies, and the "borderless" business of biotech are all evidence of the global intersections of biology and informatics—of genetic codes and computer codes. Thacker points out the internal tension in the very concept of biotechnology: the products are more "tech" than "bio," but the technology itself is fully biological, composed of the biomaterial labor of genes, proteins, cells, and tissues. Is biotechnology a technology at all, he asks, or is it a notion of "life itself" that is inseparable from its use in the biotech industry? The three sections of the book cover the three primary activities of biotechnology today: the encoding of biological materials into digital form—as in bioinformatics and genomics; its recoding in various ways—including the "biocolonialism" of mapping genetically isolated ethnic populations and the newly pervasive concern over "biological security"; and its decoding back into biological materiality—as in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Thacker moves easily from science to philosophy to political economics, enlivening his account with ideas from such thinkers as Georges Bataille, Georges Canguilhem, Michel Foucault, Antonio Negri, and Paul Virilio. The "global genome," says Thacker, makes it impossible to consider biotechnology without the context of globalism."Article| Eugene Thacker| Statement ..."

☯ Full Synopsis : "A thorough, accessible, and rigorous presentation of the centraltheorems of mathematical logic . . . ideal for advanced students ofmathematics, computer science, and logic Logic of Mathematics combines a full-scale introductory course inmathematical logic and model theory with a range of speciallyselected, more advanced theorems. Using a strict mathematicalapproach, this is the only book available that contains completeand precise proofs of all of these important theorems: * Gödel's theorems of completeness and incompleteness * The independence of Goodstein's theorem from Peanoarithmetic * Tarski's theorem on real closed fields * Matiyasevich's theorem on diophantine formulas Logic of Mathematics also features: * Full coverage of model theoretical topics such as definability, compactness, ultraproducts, realization, and omission oftypes * Clear, concise explanations of all key concepts, from Booleanalgebras to Skolem-Löwenheim constructions and othertopics * Carefully chosen exercises for each chapter, plus helpfulsolution hints At last, here is a refreshingly clear, concise, and mathematicallyrigorous presentation of the basic concepts of mathematicallogic-requiring only a standard familiarity with abstract algebra.Employing a strict mathematical approach that emphasizes relationalstructures over logical language, this carefully organized text isdivided into two parts, which explain the essentials of the subjectin specific and straightforward terms. Part I contains a thorough introduction to mathematical logic andmodel theory-including a full discussion of terms, formulas, andother fundamentals, plus detailed coverage of relational structuresand Boolean algebras, Gödel's completeness theorem, models ofPeano arithmetic, and much more. Part II focuses on a number of advanced theorems that are centralto the field, such as Gödel's first and second theorems ofincompleteness, the independence proof of Goodstein's theorem fromPeano arithmetic, Tarski's theorem on real closed fields, andothers. No other text contains complete and precise proofs of allof these theorems. With a solid and comprehensive program of exercises and selectedsolution hints, Logic of Mathematics is ideal for classroom use-theperfect textbook for advanced students of mathematics, computerscience, and logic."Article| Zofia Adamowicz| Statement ..."
