♥ Book Title : Uses of the Other
☯ Full Synopsis : "In the wake of the Cold War, European identities are up for grabs. Identity formation is an integral and tangible aspect of contemporary European politics. Drawing on an array of approaches, the author investigates empirically how six national, regional and all-European identities involve the exclusion of the East. The focus is on how identities are being renegotiated in practice. The readings of how Europe is constituted by its discourse on Turkey and Russia respectively argue that European identity of marked by these exclusions. The exclusions are part of the preconditions for action which are undertaken in political forums where European identity is seen as relevant, such as the debates about NATO and EU enlargement. Readings of regional discourses constituting repectively Northern and Central Europe argue that the politics of these regions serve to exclude those living further East. The two readings of Bashkir and Russian discourse demonstrate how the self/other nexus may be used as a springboard for analyzing national identities. The conclusion addresses the question of how far our present theoretical approaches may take us."Article| Iver B. Neumann| Statement ..."

♥ Book Title : The Other Self
☯ Full Synopsis : "The Other Self is the first English-language, book-length literary analysis of some of the most celebrated Greek novels of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. A must read for anyone interested in Greek literature and culture, it offers both a solid introduction to modern Greek literature and close reading of individual texts. Author Dimitris Tziovas focuses on the issues of identity, autobiography, and social determinism raised in these texts, providing a fresh perspective and suggesting new ways of exploring forms of engagement between self and society. Greek narratives of self, Tziovas suggests, are not naked and transparent presentations of existence, but articulations of the relationship between the individual and the social world; they are negotiations of the past through the otherness of the present. A compelling demonstration of the richness and complexity of modern Greek fiction, The Other Self provides exciting and challenging interpretations of Greek literature and Greek society."Article| Dēmētrēs Tziovas| Statement ..."

♥ Book Title : Time and the Other
☯ Full Synopsis : "Johannes Fabian takes an historical look at anthropology to demonstrate the emergence, transformation, and differentiation of uses of Time. Anthropological theory, from its beginnings in philosophy and linguistics, has provided Western thought and politics with deep-rooted images and convictions amounting to a kind of political cosmology. The anthropologists are 'here and now, ' the objects of their discourse are 'there and then, ' and the existence of the 'other'-- the 'savage', 'the 'primitive, ' the 'underdeveloped' world -- in the same time as ours is regularly denied. While written for the anthropologist, Time and the Other applies equally well to the fields of literary criticism, philosophy, and history."Article| Johannes Fabian| Statement ..."
