♥ Book Title : The Other Self
☯ Full Synopsis : "The Other Self is the first English-language, book-length literary analysis of some of the most celebrated Greek novels of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. A must read for anyone interested in Greek literature and culture, it offers both a solid introduction to modern Greek literature and close reading of individual texts. Author Dimitris Tziovas focuses on the issues of identity, autobiography, and social determinism raised in these texts, providing a fresh perspective and suggesting new ways of exploring forms of engagement between self and society. Greek narratives of self, Tziovas suggests, are not naked and transparent presentations of existence, but articulations of the relationship between the individual and the social world; they are negotiations of the past through the otherness of the present. A compelling demonstration of the richness and complexity of modern Greek fiction, The Other Self provides exciting and challenging interpretations of Greek literature and Greek society."Article| Dēmētrēs Tziovas| Statement ..."

♥ Book Title : Being for the Other
☯ Full Synopsis : ""I am definitely not a Freudian," declared Levinas in an interview. And yet, as Marcus passionately argues, Levinas's path-breaking ethical writings can profoundly enhance theoretical and clinical psychoanalysis. Like Freud, Levinas was focused on personal existence, on those issues of ultimate value and meaning that are central to what it means to be a human being at its best. Both thinkers were interested in helping to create the conditions of possibility for human beings to be kinder, gentler, stronger, and more reasonable in the face of the harshness, chaos, and moral challenges that we all face in our personal lives and on the world scene. This book aims to contribute to the development of a complementary paradigm to mainstream psychoanalysis, one that is based on the Levinasian assumption that the self is not fundamentally and firstly "for oneself," as psychoanalysis usually puts forth, but, rather, responsibility for the Other--ethics, is "the essential, primary and fundamental structure of subjectivity." The author illustrates his thesis--that the self is "hostage" to the other, that psychopathology is "ethical blunting," and treatment success is the enhanced capacity to love--with fascinating clinical vignettes and insights derived from his work as a psychoanalyst."Article| Paul Marcus| Statement ..."

♥ Book Title : Uses of the Other
☯ Full Synopsis : "In the wake of the Cold War, European identities are up for grabs. Identity formation is an integral and tangible aspect of contemporary European politics. Drawing on an array of approaches, the author investigates empirically how six national, regional and all-European identities involve the exclusion of the East. The focus is on how identities are being renegotiated in practice. The readings of how Europe is constituted by its discourse on Turkey and Russia respectively argue that European identity of marked by these exclusions. The exclusions are part of the preconditions for action which are undertaken in political forums where European identity is seen as relevant, such as the debates about NATO and EU enlargement. Readings of regional discourses constituting repectively Northern and Central Europe argue that the politics of these regions serve to exclude those living further East. The two readings of Bashkir and Russian discourse demonstrate how the self/other nexus may be used as a springboard for analyzing national identities. The conclusion addresses the question of how far our present theoretical approaches may take us."Article| Iver B. Neumann| Statement ..."
♥ Book Title : The Other Insect Societies
☯ Full Synopsis : "Asked to name an insect society, most of us--whether casual or professional students of nature--quickly point to one of the so-called eusocial marvels: the ant colony, the beehive, the termite mound, the wasp nest. Each is awe-inspiring in its division of labor--collective defense, foraging, and nestbuilding. Yet E. O. Wilson cautioned back in 1971 that sociality should be defined more broadly, "in order to prevent the arbitrary exclusion of many interesting phenomena." Thirty-five years later, James T. Costa gives those interesting phenomena their due. He argues that, in trying to solve the puzzle of how highly eusocial behaviors evolved in a few insect orders, evolutionary biologists have neglected the more diverse social arrangements in the remaining twenty-eight orders--insect societies that don't fit the eusocial schema. Costa synthesizes here for the first time the scattered literature about social phenomena across the arthropod phylum: beetles and bugs, caterpillars and cockroaches, mantids and membracids, sawflies and spiders. This wide-ranging tour takes a rich narrative approach that interweaves theory and data analysis with the behavior and ecology of these remarkable groups. This comprehensive treatment is likely to inspire a new generation of naturalists to take a closer look."Article| James T. Costa| Statement ..."
