☯ Full Synopsis : "With its vivid language and bold strokes, the magnificent History of the Conquest of Peru, first published in 1847, is one of historian William Prescott's landmark works. A masterly study of Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro's overthrow of the Inca Empire, this astonishing chronicle is considered a classic of Latin American history. Noted for its striking portrayal of the Spanish character, the book rings with a "fusion of courage, cruelty, pride, and gallows humor," says Darnell. "We seem to be overhearing dialogue and observing firsthand the interaction between the Spaniards as they struggle for control of an empire." He hails this as "an immensely readable history." Also available from Cosimo Classics: History of the Conquest of Mexico, Prescott's companion volume about Corts's subjugation of the Aztecs. Historian, writer, and scholar WILLIAM HICKLING PRESCOTT (1796-1859) was born in Salem, Massachusetts. A regular contributor to the prestigious Boston literary journal North American Review, he also authored numerous books of history, including 1837's The History of the Reign of Ferdinand and Isabella the Catholic, a critical and popular success in both America and Europe."Article| William H. ☯ Full Synopsis : "Prescott's classic history of the Andes empire, its culture, and its demise. This absorbingly readable narrative begins with a broad overview of the country and its people. The author, without the benefit of generations of archaeological and historical research, paints an extraordinarily accurate picture of the Empire of the Incas and the daily lives and customs of its people. The author concentrates on the exploits of Fernando Pizarro and his successors as they loot, pillage and dismantle one of the world's great civilizations.Originally published in 1847, Prescott's "Conquest of Peru" is considered one of the great classics of historical writing. It was the first work in the English language on the subject, and achieved wide circulation - both as a historical treatise and as novel entertainment. Although much has been written on the subject since then, this work is still the starting point for all cultural and historical discussion of the Incan world. This masterfully crafted eBook is a faithful presentation of the first edition, and includes the hundreds of footnotes which the author felt were necessary to substantiate his facts and opinions (each is placed on the page on which it is referenced). Revisions from later editions are also included. The eBook is fully-searchable and fully printable. (597pp, 4.86 Mb)"Article| William Hickling Prescott| Statement ..."

☯ Full Synopsis : "Dazzled by the sight of the vast treasure of gold and silver being unloaded at Seville’s docks in 1537, a teenaged Pedro de Cieza de León vowed to join the Spanish effort in the New World, become an explorer, and write what would become the earliest historical account of the conquest of Peru. Available for the first time in English, this history of Peru is based largely on interviews with Cieza’s conquistador compatriates, as well as with Indian informants knowledgeable of the Incan past. Alexandra Parma Cook and Noble David Cook present this recently discovered third book of a four-part chronicle that provides the most thorough and definitive record of the birth of modern Andean America. It describes with unparalleled detail the exploration of the Pacific coast of South America led by Francisco Pizarro and Diego de Almagro, the imprisonment and death of the Inca Atahualpa, the Indian resistance, and the ultimate Spanish domination. Students and scholars of Latin American history and conquest narratives will welcome the publication of this volume."Article| Pedro de Cieza de León| Statement ..."

☯ Full Synopsis : "William H. Prescott published his History of the Conquest of Mexico in 1843 and The New York Times stated that it “has remained surprisingly unsurpassed since its publication.” Prescott was one of the most eminent historians of the 19th century. The Aztec Empire was one of the most remarkable civilizations to have ever existed. The Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire was one of the most significant events in the Spanish colonization of the Americas. The Spanish campaign began in February 1519, and was declared victorious on August 13, 1521, when a coalition army of Spanish forces and native Tlaxcalan warriors led by Hernán Cortés and Xicotencatl the Younger captured the emperor Cuauhtemoc and Tenochtitlan, the capital of the Aztec Empire. Following Christopher Columbus' establishment of permanent European settlement in the Caribbean, the Spanish authorized expeditions or entradas for the discovery, conquest, and colonization of new territory, using existing Spanish settlements as a base. Many of those on the Cortés expedition of 1519 had never seen combat before. In fact, Cortés had never commanded men in battle before. However, there was a whole generation of Spaniards who participated in expeditions in the Caribbean and Tierra Firme (Central America), learning strategy and tactics of successful enterprises. The Spanish conquest of Mexico had antecedents with established practices. The fall of the Aztec Empire was the key event in the formation of the Spanish overseas empire, with New Spain, which later became Mexico, a major component."Article| Prescott, William| Statement ..."
