♥ Book Title : The Dragon in the Sea: a Case Study of Chinese Foreign Policy in the South China Sea
☯ Full Synopsis : "The South China Sea is a territory of ongoing international dispute because of its multiple overlapping sovereignty claims, valuable resources, and highly traveled sea-lanes that are crucial to all states' economic prosperity. As China, an aspiring regional hegemon, continues to assert its claim over approximately ninety percent of the Sea, the international relations schools of Realism and Neoliberalism attempt to demystify China's contradicting behavior, as it simultaneously militarizes man-made islands in the South China Sea and verbally assures the international community of its peaceful rise through its increased institutional involvement. While both international relations theories credibly explain China's actions in the Sea, both fail to recognize the importance of domestic factors such as economic development, public opinion, and Chinese nationalism. The domestic politics perspective asserts that these internal factors influence China's late authoritarian regime, which is circumscribed by the maintenance of the Chinese Communist Party's legitimacy among Chinese citizens. Using examples from recent history involving China's altercations with other South China Sea claimants, China's interactions with the United States, and also the opinions of the Chinese public, I argue that the domestic politics perspective best explains China's actions in the South China Sea as a result of its leadership's sensitivity to domestic demands."Article| Nicole Allison Rastelli| Statement ..."
♥ Book Title : Frank Herbert SF Gateway Omnibus
☯ Full Synopsis : "From The SF Gateway, the most comprehensive digital library of classic SFF titles ever assembled, comes an ideal sample introduction to one of the giants of 20th century science fiction: Frank Herbert. Although best known for his award-winning Dune, Herbert's other work is equally ambitious and accomplished. This omnibus contains three novels spanning some 20 years of Herbert's career: The Dragon in the Sea, The Santaroga Barrier and The Dosadi Experiment. THE DRAGON IN THE SEA In the endless war between East and West, oil has become the ultimate prize. Nuclear-powered subtugs brave enemy waters to tap into hidden oil reserves. Psychologist John Ramsay has gone undercover aboard a Hell Diver subtug where, hunted relentlessly by the enemy, the crew find themselves isolated in a claustrophobic undersea prison, struggling for survival against the elements . . . and themselves. THE SANTAROGA BARRIER Santaroga seemed to be nothing more than a prosperous farm community. But there was something . . . different . . . about Santaroga. Maybe Santaroga was the last outpost of American individualism. Maybe they were just a bunch of religious kooks . . . Or maybe there was something extraordinary at work in Santaroga. Deposed by a vicious usurper, a young emperor flees with his court to the small island of Taishu. There, with a dwindling army, a manipulative mother, and a resentful population–and his only friend a local fishergirl he takes as a concubine–he prepares for his last stand. In the mountains of Taishu, a young miner finds a huge piece of jade, the potent mineral whose ingestion can gift the emperor with superhuman attributes. Setting out to deliver the stone to the embattled emperor, Yu Shan finds himself changing into something more than human, something forbidden. Meanwhile, a great dragon lies beneath the strait that separates Taishu from the mainland, bound by chains that must be constantly renewed by the magic of a community of monks. When the monks are slaughtered by a willful pirate captain, a maimed slave assumes the terrible burden of keeping the dragon subdued. If he should fail, if she should rise free, the result will be slaughter on an unimaginable scale. ♥ Book Title : The Dragon in China and Japan
☯ Full Synopsis : "Little is known of Dutch author MARINUS WILLEM DE VISSER (1876-1930) beyond his academic life as a classicist with an interest in Chinese and Japanese language and culture, and as a popularizer of Japanese art in the Netherlands. He is best remembered today for having given us a cornerstone examination of the legends of fantastic flying reptiles known as dragons. The Dragon in China and Japan contains "the most interesting quotations concerning the dragon in China, systematically arranged, selected from the enormous number of passages on this fantastic animal in Chinese literature, from the remotest eras down to modern times," notes cryptozoologist Loren Coleman in his new introduction. Coleman also praises the book's use of primary source material. "If cryptozoologists are to study the Asian dragons of India, China, and Japan, it must not be done through the screen of today's New Age mentality. Scholarly, level-headed examinations of living, breathing reports of serpentine flying beasts, water-borne megafauna, and shadowy entities must be balanced with investigations of the legends and folktales of these dragons from Asian texts," such as de Visser's here. This new edition, a replica of the 1913 first edition complete with extensive notes in the original Asian alphabet, is part of Cosimo's Loren Coleman Presents series. LOREN COLEMAN is author of numerous books of cryptozoology, including Bigfoot!: The True Story of Apes in America and Mothman and Other Curious Encounters."Article| M. W. De Visser| Statement ..."
