☯ Full Synopsis : "Graphical abstract: Highlights: Microwave digestion method for C-TiO2 synthesis. C-TiO2 nanoparticles with ∼50 nm size shows absorbance in the visible region. Applicability in batch experiments, for visible light catalysis. Visible light catalysis of mixed pharmaceuticals. Abstract: The present paper deals with photocatalytic degradation of carbamazepine and diclofenac by using a modified catalyst with band gap excitations in visible light. The C-doped TiO2 was synthesized using a microwave digestion method from titanium oxyacetylacetate with glucose as the carbon source. The synthesized catalyst was then characterized using Scanning Electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray Diffractometry (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and UV-VIS-NIR spectrophotometer. The TiO2 present was in anatase phase and showed significant absorption in visible region. The catalyst was tested for the degradation of carbamazepine and diclofenac under visible light, where complete removal was achieved and the reaction followed first order kinetics. System parameters like catalyst and pollutant concentration, light intensity and time of reaction, were optimized using response surface methodology. In optimum conditions (catalyst concentration of 244 mg/L and light intensity of 7715 lx) 99% removal was achieved."Article| no defined| Statement ..."

♥ Book Title : Synthesis, characterization and applications of nanomaterials in the field of photocatalysis
☯ Full Synopsis : "Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2011 in the subject Chemistry - Materials Chemistry, East China University of Science and Technology (-), language: English, abstract: Considerable effort has been made to design, fabricate, and manipulate nanostructured materials by innovative approaches. The precise control of nanoscale structures will pave the way not only for elucidating unique size/shape dependent physicochemical properties but also for realizing new applications in science and technology. Nanotechnology offers unprecedented opportunities for improving our daily lives and the environment in which we live. This thesis mainly describes recent progress in the design, fabrication, and modification of nanostructured semiconductor materials for environmental applications. The scope of this thesis covers TiO2, Bi2O3 and BiOCl materials, focusing particularly on TiO2-based nanostructures (e.g., pure, doped, coupled, mesoporous, hierarchically porous, and ordered mesoporous TiO2). Mesoporous titania is of particular interest since this class of materials possesses well-defined porosity and large specific surface areas. For photocatalytic degradation of organics, these desirable properties are anticipated to improve the efficiency. So in the first part of work, I have synthesized the mesoporous titania by using poly ethylene glycol as a template in dilute acetic acid aqueous solution by hydrothermal process and investigated the effect of PEG molecular weights and thermal treatment on the resultant structure and photocatalytic activity. When the molecular weights of PEG vary from 600 to 20,000, the particle sizes of mesoporous-TiO2 structure decrease from 15.1 to 13.3 nm and mean pore sizes increase from 6.9-10.6 nm. The activities of these mesoporous-TiO2 photocatalysts prepared by using PEG are evaluated and compared with Degussa P-25 using chloro-phenol as a testing compound. ♥ Book Title : Low-Dimensional Systems: Theory, Preparation, and Some Applications
☯ Full Synopsis : "This volume contains papers presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) Dynamic Interactions in Quantum Dot Systems held at Hotel Atrium in Puszczykowo, near Poznan, Poland, May 16-19,2002. The term low-dimensional systems, which is used in the title of this volume, refers to those systems which contain at least one dimension that is intermediate between those characteristic ofatoms/molecules and those ofthe bulk material. Depending on how many dimensions lay within this range, we generally speak of quantum wells, quantum wires, and quantum dots. As such an intermediate state, some properties of low-dimensional systems are very different to those of their molecular and bulk counterparts. These properties generally include optical, electronic, and magnetic properties, and all these are partially covered in this book. The main goal of the workshop was to discuss the actual state of the art in the broad area ofnanotechnology. The initial focus was on the innovative synthesis of nanomaterials and their properties such as: quantum size effects, superparamagnetism, or field emission. These topics lead us into the various field based interactions including plasmon- magnetic spin- and exciton coupling. The newer, more sophisticated methods for characterization of nanomaterials were discussed, as well as the methods for possible industrial applications. In general, chemists and physicists, as well as experts on both theory and experiments on nanosized regime structures were brought together, to discuss the general phenomena underlying their fields ofinterest from different points ofview."Article| Luis M. ♥ Book Title : Photokinetics
☯ Full Synopsis : "Many books cover the determination of rate constants under different experimental conditions and different chemical composition of the reaction mixture in their formal treatment of thermal kinetics. However, most textbooks are limited to simple mechanisms. In contrast, analogous treatment of photochemical reactions is limited to the publication of special reactions and investigations. Therefore, this book is aimed at providing an overall description of formal photokinetics covering a wider scope than the usual books on kinetics. This volume attempts to provide a concise treatment of both thermo- and photochemical reactions by means of generalised differential equations, their set-up in matrix notation, and their solution by a formalism using numerical integration. At a first glance this approach might be surprising. However, apart from the argument that the didactics of thermal reactions are easier to handle than those of kinetics, the book provides additional reasons in support of this approach. Therefore, the formalism derived allows the evaluation of photochemical reactions, which are superimposed thermal reactions taking into account that the amount of light absorbed varies during the reaction. Because of this, any approximation, either by using total absorbance or negligible absorbance, will cause considerable errors even for simple reactions. The approach chosen to transform the axis of the radiation time into a new variable that includes the photokinetic factor proves that formal kinetics can be applied to thermal and photochemical reactions as well, and even allows the handling of solutions that cannot be homogenised or solid samples in which the concentration varies locally. By using this approach to introduce partial photochemical quantum yields even complex mechanisms can be determined quantitatively. A large number of examples for different mechanisms and an introduction to many spectroscopic and chromatographic methods suitable for photokinetic analyses are provided to enable the reader to carry out a step-by-step evaluation of his own measurements. To reduce the number of formula in some chapters an appendix has been included which contains a detailed description of the calculus of some essential examples. For the convenience of the reader the following has been included: • A large number of examples describing the use of formula • A detailed description of the procedure for applying photokinetics to complex consecutive photoreactions • An Internet address where the reader can find a tutorial for this procedure: http://www.barolo.ipc.uni-tuebingen.de/tele/photokin/ • A simple macro to help in programming his own evaluation procedure."Article| H.
