♥ Book Title : Speak Lord
☯ Full Synopsis : "Born to extremely young parents on August 9, 1963. raised by my mothers mother a God-fearing woman, Mother Jimmie Ann Lewis who surely deserves honorable mention and more. I have always been an avid reader and I have always put my thoughts on paper. I believe it began while in Junior High I wrote poetry and short stories. I even entered a few contests; not much ever became of that. But what I would really like you to know is when youre young you make a lot of mistakes...my husband and I worked hard at getting our credit together so we could purchase a home and just so happens that we chose a realtor who was a scheista and then we purchased a house in the middle of the ghetto; imagine that. Well, needless to say they were selling drugs out the back door and shootin each other out the front door. I am a native of Pennsylvania but several months before my 38th birthday I pondered my circumstances and realized I had been in Harrisburg all my life and it was high time for me to leave. After I had this epiphany I was determined not to celebrate 38 years in my hometown. Hence, we loaded up the truck and we moved to Beverly, no we actually moved to St. Louis, MO; to the place of my husbands birth (he wanted to be closer to his family). After only 18 months there we decided to move one more time and we are now transplants to Arizona. Lets go back, I forgot to tell you that all the while the shooting and the drug dealing was going I was petitioning heaven and this was my prayer...Lord, please increase my quality of living. Dont know exactly what I expected but after leaving the city of St. Louis where someone would go joyriding in our cars every other night, arriving in AZ and paying six hundred and some odd dollars a month for a two bedroom in a complex that had a pool I was sure God had responded. Weve been in Arizona for 7 years and weve been blessed to purchase a 4,000sf home, we have natural children, adopted children and foster children and God has done exceeding abundantly more than I asked. Not only that I picked up my pen again and O the things that God has to say! Who knew?"Article| Kandice Fleming-Ginger| Statement ..."

♥ Book Title : Evolution and Religion in American Education
☯ Full Synopsis : "Evolution and Religion in American Education shines a light into one of America’s dark educational corners, exposing the regressive pedagogy that can invade science classrooms when school boards and state overseers take their eyes off the ball. It sets out to examine the development of college students’ attitudes towards biological evolution through their lives. The fascinating insights provided by interviewing students about their world views adds up to a compelling case for additional scrutiny of the way young people’s educational experiences unfold as they consider—and indeed in some cases reject—one of science’s strongest and most cogent theoretical constructs. Inevitably, open discussion and consideration of the theory of evolution can chip away at the mental framework constructed by Creationists, eroding the foundations of their faith. The conceptual battleground is so fraught with logical challenges to Creationist dogma that in a number of cases students’ exposure to such dangerous ideas is actively prevented. This book provides a detailed map of this astonishing struggle in today’s America—a struggle many had thought was done and dusted with the onset of the Enlightenment."Article| David E. ♥ Book Title : Dancing Revelations
☯ Full Synopsis : "In the early 1960s, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater was a small, multi-racial company of dancers that performed the works of its founding choreographer and other emerging artists. By the late 1960s, the company had become a well-known African American artistic group closely tied to the Civil Rights struggle. In Dancing Revelations, Thomas DeFrantz chronicles the troupe's journey from a small modern dance company to one of the premier institutions of African American culture. He not only charts this rise to national and international renown, but also contextualizes this progress within the civil rights, women's rights, and gay rights struggles of the late 20th century. DeFrantz examines the most celebrated Ailey dances, including Revelations, drawing on video recordings of Ailey's dances, published interviews, oral histories, and his own interviews with former Ailey company dancers. Through vivid descriptions and beautiful illustrations, DeFrantz reveals the relationship between Ailey's works and African American culture as a whole. He illuminates the dual achievement of Ailey as an artist and as an arts activist committed to developing an African American presence in dance. He also addresses concerns about how dance performance is documented, including issues around spectatorship and the display of sexuality, the relationship of Ailey's dances to civil rights activism, and the establishment and maintenance of a successful, large-scale Black Arts institution. Throughout Dancing Revelations, DeFrantz illustrates how Ailey combined elements of African dance with motifs adapted from blues, jazz, and Broadway to choreograph his dances. By re-interpreting these tropes of black culture in his original and well-received dances, DeFrantz argues that Ailey played a significant role in defining the African American cultural canon in the twentieth century. As the first book to examine the cultural sources and cultural impact of Ailey's work, Dancing Revelations is an important contribution to modern dance history and criticism as well as African-American studies."Article| Thomas F. ♥ Book Title : An Alabama Songbook
☯ Full Synopsis : "A lavish presentation of 208 folksongs collected throughout Alabama in the 1940s. Alabama is a state rich in folksong tradition, from old English ballads sung along the Tennessee River to children's game songs played in Mobile, from the rhythmic work songs of the railroad gandy dancers of Gadsden to the spirituals of the Black Belt. The musical heritage of blacks and whites, rich and poor, hill folk and cotton farmers, these songs endure as a living part of the state's varied past. In the mid 1940s Byron Arnold, an eager young music professor from The University of Alabama, set out to find and record as many of these songs as he could and was rewarded by unstinting cooperation from many informants. Mrs. Julia Greer Marechal of Mobile, for example, was 90 years old, blind, and a semi-invalid, but she sang for Arnold for three hours, allowing the recording of 33 songs and exhausting Arnold and his technician. Helped by such living repositories as Mrs. Marechal, the Arnold collection grew to well over 500 songs, augmented by field notes and remarkable biographical information on the singers. An Alabama Songbook is the result of Arnold's efforts and those of his informants across the state and has been shaped by Robert W. Halli Jr. into a narrative enriched by more than 200 significant songs-lullabies, Civil War anthems, African-American gospel and secular songs, fiddle tunes, temperance songs, love ballads, play-party rhymes, and work songs. In the tradition of Alan Lomax's The Folk Songs of North America and Vance Randolph's Ozark Folksongs, this volume will appeal to general audiences, folklorists, ethnomusicologists, preservationists, traditional musicians, and historians."Article| Byron Arnold| Statement ..."
