☯ Full Synopsis : "This book investigates fiction in English, written within, and published from India since 2000 in the genre of mythology-inspired fiction in doing so it introduces the term ‘Bharati Fantasy’. This volume is anchored in notions of the ‘weird’ and thus some time is spent understanding this term linguistically, historically (‘wyrd’) as well as philosophically and most significantly socio-culturally because ‘reception’ is a key theme to this book’s thesis. The book studies the interface of science, Hinduism and itihasa (a term often translated as ‘history’) within mythology-inspired fiction in English from India and these are specifically examined through the lens of two overarching interests: reader reception and the genre of weird fiction. The book considers Indian and non-Indian receptions to the body of mythology-inspired fiction, highlighting how English fiction from India has moved away from being identified as the traditional Indian postcolonial text. Furthermore, the book reveals broader findings in relation to identity and Indianness and India’s post-millennial society’s interest in portraying and projecting ideas of India through its ancient cultures, epic narratives and cultural (Hindu) figures."Article| E. ☯ Full Synopsis : "After decades of imperfect secularism, presided over by an often corrupt Congress establishment, Nehru's diverse republic has yielded to Hindu nationalism. India is collapsing under the weight of its own contradictions. Since 2014, the ruling BJP has unleashed forces that are irreversibly transforming the country. Indian democracy, honed over decades, is now the chief enabler of Hindu extremism. Bigotry has been ennobled as a healthy form of self-assertion, and anti-Muslim vitriol has deluged the mainstream, with religious minorities living in terror of a vengeful majority. Congress now mimics Modi; other parties pray for a miracle. In this blistering critique of India from Indira Gandhi to the present, Komireddi lays bare the cowardly concessions to the Hindu right, convenient distortions of India's past and demeaning bribes to minorities that led to Modi's decisive electoral victory. If secularists fail to reclaim the republic from Hindu nationalists, Komireddi argues, India will become Pakistan by another name."Article| K. S. Komireddi| Statement ..."

☯ Full Synopsis : "This book investigates the intersection of Indian society, the encoding of post-millennial modernity and ‘ways of seeing’ through the medium of Indian graphic narratives. If seeing in Indian cultures is a mode of knowing then what might we decode and know from the Indian graphic narratives examined here? The book posits that the ‘seeing’ of post-millennial Indian graphic narratives revolves around a visuality of the inauspicious, complemented by narratives of the same. Examining both form and content across nine Indian, post-millennial graphic narratives, this book will appeal to those working in South Asian visual studies, cultural studies and comics-graphic novel studies more broadly."Article| E. ☯ Full Synopsis : "Anjali Bose’s prospects don’t look great. Born into a traditional lower-middle‑class family, she lives in a backwater town with only an arranged marriage on the horizon. But her ambition, charm, and fluency in language do not go unnoticed by her charismatic and influential expat teacher Peter Champion. And champion her he does, both to powerful people who can help her along the way and to Anjali herself, stirring in her a desire to take charge of her own destiny. So she sets off to Bangalore, India’s fastest‑growing metropolis, and soon falls in with an audacious and ambitious crowd of young people, who have learned how to sound American by watching shows like Seinfeld in order to get jobs in call centers, where they quickly out‑earn their parents. And it is in this high‑tech city where Anjali — suddenly free of the confines of class, caste, and gender — is able to confront her past and reinvent herself. Of course, the seductive pull of life in the New India does not come without a dark side . . ."Article| Bharati Mukherjee| Statement ..."

☯ Full Synopsis : "In this book, Ved Mehta tells the story—hitherto obscured by a combination of censorship, propaganda, and ignorance—of the “new India” that began in June, 1975, when Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, convicted of corrupt electoral practices, under popular pressure to resign, and constitutionally threatened with the loss of her office, in effect carried out a coup in her own country and set about rewriting the constitution to fashion a dictatorship. Opening with a brooding portrayal of the Indian capital in the days before the “new India” began—a time of signs and portents, as in an Elizabethan drama—Mr. Mehta draws up a powerful brief against Mrs. Gandhi, recounting how, with her son Sanjay (whose dynastic ambitions were growing ever more blatant), she ruled by decree; jailed and tortured political opponents; suspended civil liberties and judicial safeguards; silenced the press; and levelled inner-city slums, relocating their inhabitants in barbed-wire-enclosed camps and subjecting them to a program of forced sterilization. He goes on to review Mrs. Gandhi’s life and career, and to disentangle the web of reasons for the downfall of what he calls her “Orwellian regime,” placing the story in its historical and social context, narrating it without polemic and without moralizing, and presenting it piece by piece, as though each event, each figure were part of an engrossing jigsaw puzzle. This account, written in the elegant and incisive style for which Mr. Mehta is known, is the first accurate report and analysis we have had of the “new India”; it affords a searching look at the world’s most populous democracy in the light of the rise and fall of one of the most mercurial leaders of our time. The elections that in March, 1977, brought about Mrs. Gandhi’s precipitous defeat are, Mr. Mehta concludes, “the most hopeful sign in recent years for the growth of democracy in a poor country.”"Article| Ved Mehta| Statement ..."

☯ Full Synopsis : "India remains a country mired in poverty, with two-thirds of its 1.3 billion people living on little more than a few dollars a day. Just as telling, the country's informal working population numbers nearly 500 million, or approximately eighty percent of the entire labor force. Despite these figures and the related structural disadvantages that imperil the lives of so many, the Indian elite maintain that the poor need only work harder and they, too, can become rich. The results of this ambitious ten-year ethnography at exclusive golf clubs in Bangalore shatter such self-serving illusions. In Narrow Fairways, Patrick Inglis combines participant observation, interviews, and archival research to show how social mobility among the poor lower-caste golf caddies who carry the golf sets of wealthy upper-caste members at these clubs is ultimately constrained and narrowed. The book highlights how elites secure and extend class and caste privileges, while also delivering a necessary rebuke to India's present development strategy, which pays far too little attention to promoting quality healthcare, education, and other basic social services that would deliver real opportunities to the poor."Article| Patrick Inglis| Statement ..."

☯ Full Synopsis : "Reversing his parents immigrant path, a young writer returns to India and discovers an old country making itself new. Anand Giridharadas sensed something was afoot as his plane prepared to land in Bombay. An elderly passenger looked at him and said, Were all trying to go that way, pointing to the rear. You, youre going this way. Giridharadas was returning to the land of his ancestors, amid an unlikely economic boom. But he was interested less in its gold rush than in its cultural upheaval, as a new generation has sought to reconcile old traditions with new ambitions. In India Calling, Giridharadas brings to life the people and the dilemmas of India today, as seen through the prism of his migr family history and his childhood memories. He blends the objectivity of the outsider with the intimacy of the insider. The result is India seen at once from within and without. Giridharadas introduces us to entrepreneurs, radicals, industrialists and religious seekers, but, most of all, to Indian families. Through their stories, and his own, he paints an intimate portrait of a country becoming modern while striving to remain itself."Article| Anand Giridharadas| Statement ..."
