☯ Full Synopsis : "In the later Middle Ages, many writers claimed that prose is superior to verse as a vehicle of knowledge because it presents the truth in an unvarnished form, without the distortions of meter and rhyme. Beginning in the thirteenth century, works of verse narrative from the early Middle Ages were recast in prose, as if prose had become the literary norm. Instead of dying out, however, verse took on new vitality. In France verse texts were produced, in both French and Occitan, with the explicit intention of transmitting encyclopedic, political, philosophical, moral, historical, and other forms of knowledge. In Knowing Poetry, Adrian Armstrong and Sarah Kay explore why and how verse continued to be used to transmit and shape knowledge in France. They cover the period between Jean de Meun’s Roman de la rose (c. 1270) and the major work of Jean Bouchet, the last of the grands rhétoriqueurs (c. 1530). The authors find that the advent of prose led to a new relationship between poetry and knowledge in which poetry serves as a medium for serious reflection and self-reflection on subjectivity, embodiment, and time. They propose that three major works—the Roman de la rose, the Ovide moralisé, and Boethius’ Consolation of Philosophy—form a single influential matrix linking poetry and intellectual inquiry, metaphysical insights, and eroticized knowledge. The trio of thought-world-contingency, poetically represented by Philosophy, Nature, and Fortune, grounds poetic exploration of reality, poetry, and community."Article| Adrian Armstrong| Statement ..."

☯ Full Synopsis : "For many centuries, the Western imagination has pictured the medieval period as a kind of odyssey: a journey that took humankind to a strange country and ended in the Renaissance with its homecoming and the restoration of its inheritance. In this stimulating and provocative book, Christopher Page, Director of the acclaimed early music vocal group Gothic Voices, explores the kinds of generalizations that we habitually make about "the Middle Ages" and which, whether we know it or not, sustain the false image of a medieval odyssey. In chapters that proceed chronologically from the thirteenth to the fifteenth century, he examines what we suppose to be the serenity of medieval reflection on such matters as the "numerical" explanation of musical beauty, and he questions the modern tendency to regard Ars antiqua motets as music for "an intellectual elite." Turning to the Ars Nova and beyond, he discusses the relation between fourteenth century innovations and contemporary science. A final chapter explores the powerful influence of Johan Huizinga's classic The Waning of the Middle Ages upon musicology. Page's lively prose is full of provocative ideas, and is enriched by an uncommonly deep experience of medieval music."Article| Christopher Page| Statement ..."

☯ Full Synopsis : "Conductus repertory of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries comes under re-investigation in this study. Christopher Page seeks to revise certain opinions about medieval Latin poetry which some exponents of modal theory have entertained. The book develops a view that spoken performances and sung performances of this repertory had their own distinct traditions, and that the most acceptable method of transcription for many conducti is a rhythmically neutral one which signals the wide range of possible rhythmic solutions to performance of these songs."Article| Christopher Page| Statement ..."

☯ Full Synopsis : "This book is the first full-length study of the courtly love songs of the trouvere to address the central musical problems of the repertoire as a whole, embracing source studies, interpretation, historiography, and analysis. The argument of the book revolves around three axes, each of which is essential to the appreciation of the others: problems concerning the extant manuscript tradition; the crucial role of orality; and stylistic changes and plurality in the reperotire. For the firsttime, a full overview of the sources and notation is undertaken. This reveals the idiosyncrasies of individual manuscripts but, more importantly, it identifies two basic phases in the manuscript tradition. The study of melodic variants reveals the performance art that lies at the heart of the courtly grand chant; processes and techniques of variation are examined, bringing us to a closer understanding of the tenets of the melodic art of the early trouveres. A close study of select trouveres from the different generation reveals stylstic change and plurality, particularly in the melodic art which in some respects was less prescribed than the poetic texts. Consequently the courtly songs of the trouveres truly come alive in this book."Article| Mary J. O'Neill| Statement ..."

☯ Full Synopsis : ""This exploration of Machaut's life and work focuses on his music based on cantus firmi: twenty-three motets, the David Hocket, and the Mass of Our Lady. Machaut informs us as to his artistic goals, encouraging us to look for what he calls "Scens," or "meaning." The meaning of his music is brought to light through study of its liturgical and ecclesiastical context in Reims, of the books and poetry found in the cathedral library, and of the royal associations of the church. Machaut emerges as a composer deeply involved in the great crises of his day, one who skillfully and artfully expresses profound themes of human existence in ardent music and poetry."--BOOK JACKET."Article| Anne Walters Robertson| Statement ..."
