Excerpt from book: CATO The Younger. TH family of Cato had its firft luftre and diftinction from his great grandfather, Cato the cenfor, a man whofe virtue, as we have obferved in his life, ranked him with perfons of the greateft reputation and authority in Rome. The Utican Cato, of whom we are now fpeaking, was left an orphan, together with his brother Caepio, and his fifter Porcia. He had alfo another fifter called Servilia, but fhe was only fifter by the mother's fide-f. The orphans were brought up in the houfeof Livius Drufus, their mother's brother, who at that time had great influence in the adminiftration; to which he was entitled by his eloquence, his wifdom, and dignity of mind, excellencies that put him upon an equality with the beft of the Romans. Cato, we are told, from his infancy difcovered in his voice, his look, and his very diverfions, a firm- nefs andiblidity, which neither pafiion nor any thing elfe could move. He purfued every object he had in view with a vigour far above his years, and a re- folution that nothing could refift. Thofe who were inclined to flatter him were fure to meet with a fe- vere repulfe, and to thofe who attempted to intimidate him, he was ftill more untractable. Scarce any thing could make him laugh, and it was but rarely that his countenance was foftened to a fmile. He was not quickly or eafily moved to anger; but it was difficult to appeafe his refentment when once excited. Cato the cenfor, at a very late period in life, married Salo- nia, daughter of his own fteward. There was a family, however, from that fecond match, which flourifhed when that which came from the firft was extinft. f Servilia was not his only lifter by the mother's fide; there were three of them. One, the mother of Brutus who killed 'Caefar; another married to Lucullus..."Article| Plutarch| Statement ..."

☯ Full Synopsis : "The Tazza Farnese is one of the most admired objects from classical antiquity. A libation bowl carved from banded agate, it features Medusa's head on its outside and, inside, an assembly of Egyptian gods. For more than two millennia, these radiant figures have mesmerized emperors and artists, popes and thieves, merchants and museum goers. In this, the first book-length account of this renowned masterpiece, Marina Belozerskaya traces its fascinating journey through history. That it has survived at all is a miracle. The Tazza's origins date back to Ptolemaic Egypt where it likely enhanced the power and prestige of Cleopatra. After her defeat by Emperor Augustus, the bowl began an amazing itinerary along many flashpoints in world history. It likely traveled from Rome to Constantinople. After that city's sack by crusaders in 1204, it returned west to inspire the classical revival at the court of Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II at Palermo. The Tazza next graced Tamerlane's court at Samarqand, before becoming an obsession of Renaissance popes and princes. It witnessed the rediscovery of Pompeii and Herculaneum, the turbulent aftermath of the French Revolution, and the birth of the modern Italian state. Throughout its journey, the Tazza aroused the lust of Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Mongol rulers, consoled a heart-broken duchess, inspired artists including Botticelli and Raphael, tempted spies and thieves, and drew the ire of a deranged museum guard who nearly destroyed it. More than a biography of the world's most cherished bowl, Medusa's Gaze is a vivid and delightful voyage through history."Article| Marina Belozerskaya| Statement ..."
