☯ Full Synopsis : "Excerpt from Plutarch, His Life, His Parallel Lives, and His Morals IN preparing for the press a Lecture upon Plutarch which I delivered last year to a small Literary Society in Dublin, I was insensibly led on from one point to another, until, and I may say quite against my will and intention, that one had grown into many. I might hesitate to publish so much about one with whom everybody assumes himself familiar, were it not that, where such is indeed the fact, it is in almost every case only with his lives that this familiarity exists. The other writings of Plutarch, not unworthy of being known, are for all this so slightly known, that this little volume, more than one half of which is dedi cated to them, may, perhaps, contain enough which is not altogether old and outworn to justify its publi cation. ☯ Full Synopsis : "Plutarch, later named, on his becoming a Roman citizen, Lucius Mestrius Plutarchus, c. 46 - 120 AD, was a Greek historian, biographer, essayist, and Middle Platonist known primarily for his Parallel Lives and Moralia. Plutarch lived most of his life at Chaeronea, and his duties as the senior of the two priests of Apollo at the Oracle of Delphi (where he was responsible for interpreting the auguries of the Pythia) apparently occupied little of his time. He led an active social and civic life while producing an extensive body of writing, much of which survived. By his writings and lectures Plutarch became a celebrity in the Roman Empire. At his country estate, guests from all over the empire congregated for serious conversation, presided over by Plutarch in his marble chair. Many of these dialogues were recorded and published, and the 78 essays and other works which have survived are now known collectively as the Moralia. Plutarch's best-known work is the Parallel Lives, a series of biographies of famous Greeks and Romans, arranged in pairs to illuminate their common moral virtues and vices. The surviving Lives contain 23 pairs, each with one Greek Life and one Roman Life, as well as four unpaired single Lives. Some of the Lives, such as those of Heracles, Philip II of Macedon and Scipio Africanus, no longer exist; many of the remaining Lives are truncated, contain obvious lacunae or have been tampered with by later writers. Extant Lives include those on Aristides, Pericles, Pompey, Julius Caesar, Cicero, Cato the Younger, Mark Antony, and Marcus Junius Brutus, all of which are included here."Article| Plutarch| Statement ..."

☯ Full Synopsis : "At the beginning of the second century C.E., Plutarch of Chaeronea wrote a series of pairs of biographies of Greek and Roman statesmen. Their purpose is moral: the reader is invited to reflect on important ethical issues and to use the example of these great men from the past to improve his or her own conduct. This book off ers the first full-scale commentary on the Life of Alcibiades. It examines how Plutarch's biography of one of classical Athens' most controversial politicians functions within the moral program of the Parallel Lives. Built upon the narratological distinction between story and text, Simon Verdegem's analysis, which involves detailed comparisons with other Plutarchan works (especially the Lives of Nicias and Lysander) and several key texts in the Alcibiades tradition (e.g., Plato, Thucydides, and Xenophon), demonstrates how Plutarch carefully constructed his story and used a wide range of narrative techniques to create a complex Life that raises interesting questions about the relation between private morality and the common good."Article| Simon Verdegem| Statement ..."

☯ Full Synopsis : "This book contains a collection of 13 essays from leading scholars on the relationship between passionate emotions and moral advancement in Greek and Roman thought. Recognising that emotions played a key role in whether individuals lived happily, ancient philosophers extensively discussed the nature of "the passions", showing how those who managed their emotions properly would lead better, more moral lives. The contributions are preceded by an introdution to the subject by John Fitzgerald. Writers discussed include the Cynics, the Neopythagorians, Aristotle and Ovid; the discussion encompasses philosophy, literature and religion."Article| John T. Fitzgerald| Statement ..."

☯ Full Synopsis : "Plutarch was a Greek biographer and essayist who lived c. AD 46 - AD 120. He is known primarily for his Parallel Lives - a series of biographies of Greeks and Romans, arranged in pairs to highlight their common moral virtues and vices. Written in Greek for a Roman and Greek audience, Parallel Lives have come to be regarded as a cornerstone of Western literature. Plutarch's Life of Alexander, written as a parallel to that of Julius Caesar, is one of only five extant tertiary sources on the reign of Alexander III of Macedon, better known to history as Alexander the Great (r. 336-323 BC). The following text is based on the Dryden translation of 1683, which was then edited in 1859 by Arthur Hugh Clough. The text as presented remains true to the original work, however, the present author has deemed it beneficial to submit the text to further minor editing - correcting small errors in grammar, spelling, use of archaic language in a handful of places, etc."Article| Plutarch| Statement ..."
