☯ Full Synopsis : "It is a close study of four novels by Boris Vian. It aims to show how L'Écume des jours, L'Automne à Pékin, L'Herbe rouge andL'Arrache-coeur form a unified and coherent tetralogy. By establishing close links between these four texts, it becomes possible to achieve a more comprehensive understanding, not only of the significance of the tetralogy in exposing a complex and multi-layered novelistic strategy at the heart of the vianesque, but of the individual novels as autonomous creations. An examination of the novels reveals that they are not merely joined to one another via a superficial network of textual similarities (that which I refer to as intratextuality), but that this intertwining is emblematic of a common method of narrative construction. Each Vian novel is dependent, for a thoroughunderstanding of the text to be possible, upon the multiple lines of external influence running through it. The sources of this influence (which I refer to asintertextuality) are located in various major texts of twentieth century literature, anglophone as well as francophone. Thus, in each instance the narrative is driven by a complicated interaction of intratextuality and intertextuality."Article| Alistair Charles Rolls| Statement ..."

☯ Full Synopsis : "Œdipus was written when Voltaire was but nineteen years of age. It was played for the first time in 1718, and ran for forty-five nights. Du Frêsne, a celebrated actor, and of the same age as the author, played the part of Œdipus; and Madame Desmarêts, a famous actress, did Jocaste, and soon after quitted the stage. In this edition, the part of Philoctetes is restored, and stands exactly as it was in the first representation. Wilder Publications is a green publisher. All of our books are printed to order. This reduces waste and helps us keep prices low while greatly reducing our impact on the environment."Article| Voltaire| Statement ..."

☯ Full Synopsis : "Natural and social sciences seem very often to hedge their laws by ceteris paribus clauses - a practice which is philosophically very hard to understand because such clauses seem to render the laws trivial and unfalsifiable. This volume collects the most prominent philosophers of science in the field and presents a lively, controversial, but well-integrated, highly original discussion of the issue. It will be the reference book in the coming years concerning ceteris paribus laws."Article| John Earman, Clark Glymour, Sandra Mitchell| Statement ..."

☯ Full Synopsis : "The view of translation as a socially regulated activity has opened up a broad field of research in the last few years. This volume deals with central questions of the new domain and aims to contribute to the conceptualisation of a general sociology of translation. Interdisciplinary in approach, it discusses the role of major representatives of sociology like Pierre Bourdieu, Bruno Latour, Bernard Lahire, Anthony Giddens or Niklas Luhmann in establishing a theoretical framework for a sociology of translation. Drawing on methodologies from sociology and integrating them into translation studies, the book questions some of the established categories in this discipline and calls for a redefinition of long-assumed principles. The contributions show the social involvement of translation in various fields and focus especially on the translator s position in an emerging sociology of translation, Bourdieu s influence in conceptualising this new sub-discipline, methodological questions and a sociologically oriented meta-discussion of translation studies."Article| Michaela Wolf, Alexandra Fukari| Statement ..."

☯ Full Synopsis : "From the INTRODUCTION. The life of Francesco Redi centers in a period favorable to his fame. He was born in Arezzo, Tuscany, in 1626, sixteen years after the publication of Galileo's "Sydereus Nuncius" and six years before his "Dialogues on the Ptolemaic and Copernican Systems," at a time when the twenty century old authority of Aristotle was still undiminished. The speculative philosophers Bruno, Campanella, Varini, and Kepler, all critics of Aristotle, prepared the way for the new Master, who was creator as well as critic. There was a third influence, however, to be considered: the Jesuits had monopolized all branches of learning, and had made Aristotle their own. His observations presented in the form of concrete and isolated facts, and especially his theories concerning the stability of the earth and the fixity of species, were not subversive of theological doctrine, hence the fathers invoked his name to clench every proposition. But the Mathematician put the Biologist's simple "qualities" together and on comparing them with his own ascertained "quantities," found new values, hence new truths. The combination of mathematical and natural science was formidable, especially when expressed in the vernacular; the Church, alarmed by Galileo's " Dialogues," demanded his abjuration. Redi was committed early to the care of the Jesuit Fathers. After leaving their school in Florence, he studied medicine and philosophy at the University of Pisa, whence he returned with his Doctor's degree to practice in Florence, where his family, meanwhile, had settled. His parents were of the provincial nobility, and his father, Gregory, a well-known physician, supported the family by his profession. Francesco had the good luck to be called to attend the Grand Duke after a hunting accident. Subsequently he became court physician and was much beloved by Ferdinand II and by his son and successor, Cosimo III. This prince did not resemble his magnanimous father, the founder of the Accademia del Cimento, for he did not protect the arts and sciences through love of them, but rather from vanity and a sense of his own importance. Cosimo was a bigot, whose mind was chiefly occupied in prosecuting religious offenders or in settling matters of etiquette. Small wonder that Swammerdam refused an invitation to this Court, or that Steno, his friend, who accepted it, soon afterwards abjured Protestantism. Redi's training admirably fitted him for this position, which was a difficult one; for besides his duties as physician and head of the Medicean laboratory, he was often commanded to negotiate minor diplomatic matters or requested to act as mediator when friction occurred between the Grand Duke and his son. He was obliged to follow the Court in its migrations to seaside and villa, forced to interrupt his own work, and to add to his troubles, his nephews (Redi was unmarried), who through his influence held lucrative positions, were often in difficulties of a compromising nature...."Article| Francesco Redi| Statement ..."

☯ Full Synopsis : "The poet and artist Marcel Broodthaers (1924-76) is widely recognized as a key figure in 20th century art who questioned the nature of art, the role of the artist, the functioning of the museum and of the art market. This book sets out Broodthaers's strategy for artistic success and examines the dialogue into which he entered with his contemporaries and predecessors in 19th century French poetry, Pop and Conceptual Art, including Stephane Mallarme, Charles Baudelaire, Marcel Duchamp and Rene Magritte. It provides a broad overview of his objects, paintings, films, slides, books and installations, and his focus upon relationships, also central to Post-Structuralist and postmodern theories. The visual qualities of his works, combining the material with the poetic, his wit and irony, are examined in relation to his subtle method of questioning and contradicting, defying conventional systems and definitions. The author explores the wider framing contexts in which things are presented and the geographical context via maps, notions of the voyage and a sense of place. Institutional critique, the artist's political position and moral responsibilities in society are discussed by analyzing the responses of Broodthaers, Daniel Buren, Joseph Beuys and Hans Haacke to a series of museum events in the early 1970s.""Article| Deborah Schultz| Statement ..."

☯ Full Synopsis : "In the 1950s, a group of critics writing for Cahiers du Cinéma launched one of the most successful and influential trends in the history of film criticism: auteur theory. Though these days it is frequently usually viewed as limited and a bit old-fashioned, a closer inspection of the hundreds of little-read articles by these critics reveals that the movement rested upon a much more layered and intriguing aesthetics of cinema. This book is a first step toward a serious reassessment of the mostly unspoken theoretical and aesthetic premises underlying auteur theory, built around a reconstruction of Eric Rohmer's early but decisive leadership of the group, whereby he laid down the foundations for the eventual emergence of their full-fledged auteurism."Article| Marco Grosoli| Statement ..."
