☯ Full Synopsis : "How does a city survive its worst recession in living memory? Cork entered the 1980s with swagger. The 1970s had been dominated nationally by the city's favourite son, Jack Lynch, who was Taoiseach for much of the decade. And the sense of superiority wasn't confined to the political arena. The city had given Ireland a world-class rock star in Rory Gallagher, and boasted one of the first internationally recognised film festivals. Cork bustled: Patrick Street on a Saturday afternoon heaved with shoppers in Roches Stores and Cash's. There was a stability to the city, anchored by the institutions from which it drew its identity: the university, the Murphy's and Beamish breweries, the English Market. Underpinning those were key employers such as Ford, Dunlop and Verolme – internationally recognised names, deeply rooted in the fabric of the community after providing decades of employment. Confident and busy, Cork seemed to buck the trend of the late 1970s, as the ripples of the oil crisis spread economic uncertainty across the globe. But by the middle of the 1980s, the city had been plunged into chaos. Ford, Dunlop and Verolme all closed within eighteen months. Every institution in the city seemed under threat. The two breweries came close to shutting down. The English Market survived not one but two devastating fires. Cork Corporation strongly considered turning it into a car park. The uncertainty spread beyond the unemployment statistics, horrific though they were, manifesting itself in religious hysteria, protest voting and crime. Cork had become a rust-belt region. But a spiky self-belief, determined natives and vital new industries made all the difference as the city began the often painful transition from traditional manufacturing to what we now term 'the knowledge economy'. Drawing on extensive interviews with politicians, workers, writers and industrialists, Michael Moynihan weaves a sweeping tapestry of the city at a critical juncture. In a rich narrative, he tells the compelling story of how Cork's eventual status as a high-tech hub was won."Article| Michael Moynihan| Statement ..."

☯ Full Synopsis : "Ken McGrath is an icon in Waterford and beyond. He won three All-Star hurling awards and embodied the defiance and panache that re-established his county as a hurling superpower. And in a career marked with skill and bravery in equal measure, Ken McGrath has overcome serious injuries to produce match-winning performances. But a dazzling playing career is only half the story. In the firestorm of the downturn McGrath lost his sports shop. Then he was stricken with a brain haemorrhage and later, after months of uncertainty in hospital, he was diagnosed with a heart problem which necessitated life-saving surgery. And it is a measure of the esteem in which he's held that one summer's evening, at Walsh Park, almost ten thousand supporters attended a benefit game to show their appreciation for one of the greatest-ever hurlers. Hand On Heart tells the tales of the great rivalries with Cork and Kilkenny, championship wins with Mount Sion and the on-field controversies that had everyone talking. It's also the extraordinary and inspiring story of how Ken McGrath overcame serious illness after an incredible fight for life. As both a sporting and a human story, Hand On Heart is a truly remarkable and uplifting read. Book jacket."Article| Ken McGrath| Statement ..."

☯ Full Synopsis : "Set as deeply in his mind as in the depths of the Southeast-Asian jungle, a young American soldier embarks on a journey to a war that, for him, will never be over. I am that American soldier. It's 1969. I am 19 and living in New York City. The world was a playground for Mickey, a naive Irish-American kid bored with his life who felt he was ready for the adventures of war. His father served in World War II, his brother a Marine in Vietnam, now it was his turn. His 365 days in the hell that was Vietnam builds in torment until an attack on a bunker complex in Cambodia where everything goes terribly wrong. Wounded, his friend captured, he becomes a tormented survivor knowing he is always just a heartbeat from death. His adventure turned nightmare brings a visceral understanding of the words penned by Thoreau, those very same words with which his father imparted enduring wisdom throughout his youth: "Most men live lives of quiet desperation," especially those at war. This emotional journey of self-realization chronicles the key perspective--shaping experiences of a U.S. Army grunt fighting in Vietnam."Article| Michael P. Moynihan, Jr.| Statement ..."
