♥ Book Title : Jesus the Christ
☯ Full Synopsis : "The scope of the subject presented in this work is expressed on the title page. It will be readily seen that the author has departed from the course usually followed by writers on the Life of Jesus Christ, which course, as a rule, begins with the birth of Mary's Babe and ends with the ascension of the slain and risen Lord from Olivet. The treatment embodied in these pages, in addition to the narrative of the Lord's life in the flesh comprizes the antemortal existence and activities of the world's Redeemer, the revelations and personal manifestations of the glorified and exalted Son of God during the apostolic period of old and in modern times, the assured nearness of the Lord's second advent, and predicted events beyond—all so far as the Holy Scriptures make plain. It is particularly congruous and appropriate that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints—the only Church that affirms authority based on specific revelation and commission to use the Lord's Holy Name as a distinctive designation—should set forth her doctrines concerning the Messiah and His mission. The author of this volume entered upon his welcome service under request and appointment from the presiding authorities of the Church; and the completed work has been read to and is approved by the First Presidency and the Council of the Twelve. It presents, however, the writer's personal belief and profoundest conviction as to the truth of what he has written. The book is published by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A characteristic feature of the work is the guidance afforded by modern scriptures and the explication of the Holy Writ of olden times in the light of present day revelation, which, as a powerful and well directed beam, illumines many dark passages of ancient construction. The spirit of the sacredness inherent in the subject has been a constant companion of the writer throughout his pleasing labor, and he reverently invokes the same as a minister to the readers of the volume."Article| James E. ♥ Book Title : Jesus the Christ
☯ Full Synopsis : "Written under request from the First Presidency, and later approved by the Prophet, First Presidency and Council of the Twelve Apostles, Jesus the Christ is perhaps one of the most accurate and comprehensive books written on the Savior’s life, ministry, teachings and atonement. Uniquely written inside the Salt Lake City temple, Jesus the Christ takes an ahead-of-its-time approach to the life of the Savior by including the antemortal existence and activities of the world's Redeemer, the revelations and personal manifestations of the glorified and exalted Son of God during the apostolic period of old and in modern times, the assured nearness of the Lord's second advent, and predicted events beyond. The author describes this book as “a powerful and well directed beam, [which] illumines many dark passages of ancient construction.” As an inspired writing, the author acknowledges the constant companionship of the “spirit of sacredness” throughout his labor of love in writing this book. Like the prophets of ancient and modern days, Elder Talmage reverently envokes the spirit of sacredness to be with all the readers of this volume. Elder Talmage died in 1933, thus making this writing a “Voice from the Dust.” In recognition of 100 years since its original publication, Latter-day Strengths is well-pleased to present this edition of Jesus the Christ."Article| James E. ☯ Full Synopsis : "Here at last is a reissue of Kasper's major work with a brilliant new introduction surveying recent developments in Christology. Kasper assesses the Christological enterprise in the Church from the earliest down to the most recent times which can be recommended without hesitation to teacher and serious student. The book also provides a solid theological basis for preaching. Â This may also be described as a work of Christian serenity, but one which is not indifferent to current problems. It is the fruit of the deep peace which all men can gain from contemplation of Jesus the Christ. Â As Karl Rahner has said - this book is 'modern' in the very best sense of the word. Synthesising biblical, philosophical and traditional material, the book remains essential reading for specialists and is used widely for courses on Christology - the very basis of Christian theology itself."Article| Walter Kasper| Statement ..."

♥ Book Title : Jesus, the Christ
☯ Full Synopsis : "Christology, that is, the study of Jesus, is a many-faceted subject. In this new edition of Jesus, the Christ, Brennan Hill clearly and cogently explores this critical theological area, resulting in a luminous and reliable portrait of the Jesus of history and the Christ of faith. He deftly surveys both the breadth of information covered in the previous edition as well as the wealth of developments that have occurred in the field since the early 1990s. Jesus, the Christ looks at the people and places in Jesus' time, then moves to a search for the historical Jesus. Hill next looks at the many areas of Jesus' life and mission: teacher, prophet, miracle worker, man of the earth, advocate for women, savior, and liberator. He examines the main gospel stories about Jesus' birth, death, and resurrection, and illustrates how the early christological doctrines developed. This new edition is written in a more informal and accessible style, enabling students to well understand and grasp the concepts and facts about the subject. Each chapter ends with discussion questions and a list of suggestions for further reading. Jesus, the Christ is eminently readable, constantly challenging, and filled with timely information in nontechnical language. It is strongly rooted in the best of modern biblical translation, and will be welcomed by students, teachers, and the general reader alike."Article| Brennan R. Hill| Statement ..."

♥ Book Title : The Baptism of Jesus the Christ
☯ Full Synopsis : "The baptism of Jesus by John the Baptizer is one of the theologically richest narratives in the Gospels, touching the transition from the old to the new covenant, the doctrines of water and Holy Spirit baptism, and the doctrine of the Trinity, to name only the most significant of topics. In The Baptism of Jesus the Christ, Ralph Allan Smith addresses each of these areas, aiming in particular to respond to James D. G. Dunn's view that Jesus' baptism and the gift of the Spirit are fundamentally distinct events, to revive John Calvin's view of the baptism of Jesus as central to understanding Christian baptism, and to suggest directions for re-thinking the doctrine of God's attributes in the light of the fully personal interaction of Father, Son, and Spirit reflected in the baptismal narrative."Article| Ralph Allan Smith| Statement ..."
♥ Book Title : Lord Jesus Christ
☯ Full Synopsis : "This outstanding book provides an in-depth historical study of the place of Jesus in the religious life, beliefs, and worship of Christians from the beginnings of the Christian movement down to the late second century. Lord Jesus Christ is a monumental work on earliest Christian devotion to Jesus, sure to replace Wilhelm Bousset s Kyrios Christos (1913) as the standard work on the subject. Larry Hurtado, widely respected for his previous contributions to the study of the New Testament and Christian origins, offers the best view to date of how the first Christians saw and reverenced Jesus as divine. In assembling this compelling picture, Hurtado draws on a wide body of ancient sources, from Scripture and the writings of such figures as Ignatius of Antioch and Justin to apocryphal texts such as the Gospel of Thomas and the Gospel of Truth. Hurtado considers such themes as early beliefs about Jesus divine status and significance, but he also explores telling devotional practices of the time, including prayer and worship, the use of Jesus name in exorcism, baptism and healing, ritual invocation of Jesus as Lord, martyrdom, and lesser-known phenomena such as prayer postures and the curious scribal practice known today as the nomina sacra. The revealing portrait that emerges from Hurtado s comprehensive study yields definitive answers to questions like these: How important was this formative period to later Christian tradition? When did the divinization of Jesus first occur? Was early Christianity influenced by neighboring religions? How did the idea of Jesus divinity change old views of God? And why did the powerful dynamics of early beliefs and practices encourage people to make the costly move of becoming a Christian? Boasting an unprecedented breadth and depth of coverage — the book speaks authoritatively on everything from early Christian history to themes in biblical studies to New Testament Christology — Hurtado s Lord Jesus Christ is at once significant enough that a wide range of scholars will want to read it and accessible enough that general readers interested at all in Christian origins will also profit greatly from it."Article| Larry W. Hurtado| Statement ..."
