Can true love keep you alive? It is dark and eerie in this old abandoned room of the Palmer Boarding House. With some of the wallpaper that is torn off and hanging in strips. Along with old blistered paint, that is peeling away from the wood trim. It looks tired and run down now and I feel a bit sad because of its ill kept state. This was once my room and I never would have thought Id be forced to stay here against my will. It has only been a few short months since I had to move out. Now I am back and I do not know how long I have to stay hiding in this unpleasant prison. Earlier today I had to take refuge amongst the scattered debris that was left behind in my apartment. I had heard footsteps coming up the stairs. A constable looked through the opened doorway into the room, as I watched him from the pile of boxes and old news prints. My heart beat frantically, I thought he could see me or would hear me, but he did not. He seemed satisfied that the room contained nothing more than rubbish or the occasional rat or mouse. He closed the door and continued down the hallway to check the rest of the upstairs. The officer would only find the bathroom and the small linen closet. I watched the door carefully, waiting for it to open again. To my relief, I heard him go downstairs. A little later I was sure the constable had left the building. Still I remained hidden for about two long and arduous hours. With the greatest of caution, I crawled upon my hands and knees toward the window, on the opposite side of the room. Slowly I ventured to peek out of the window with my nose pressed against the sill. There was no one to be seen on the street below. The lace curtains now tattered and dusty, blew to and fro in the breeze coming through the broken window pane. The curtains will help hide my presence here, I hope. Feeling the stress upon myself and worried what I was to do, I sat on the floor beneath the window, with my back against the wall. My eyes focussed on the debris in the room. I was trying to sort out the thoughts that were dancing around in my head. What am I going to do now? Nearly crying out loud. Survival became my ultimate choice and I soon knew what to do. Going from one abandoned apartment to another on the first floor, with the results of a few canned goods, preserves and flour. In order to cook anything without being detected, I would have to use the wood stove in Mrs. Lawrences old apartment downstairs. The brick buildings were constructed so close together that they had to join into one chimney. They would think that the smoke was coming from the other apartment house. The water at first reeked with reddish brown rust from the old pipes. It was difficult to locate a decent cooking pot without a hole in the bottom. Miss. ☯ Full Synopsis : "Dear Joan comprises a unique series of letters between a young airman, Tony Ross, and Joan Charles, a girl whom he met briefly in England before he was posted to the Mediterranean during the Second World War. Through these letters, the book traces the development of their relationship from friendship to long-lasting love. With the enthusiasm of youth, Tony and Joan share their dreams of an ideal life in a reconstructed, post-Second World War Britain. Joan's letters reveal the problems of daily life in wartime Britain and give an insight into her voluntary work for the Fire Guard, the land army and the Red Cross, and the bureaucracy she encounters in her job with the Civil Service. Meanwhile, Tony describes the challenges of life in the desert, his increasing responsibilities in the RAF and his experiences in the numerous countries he visits throughout the Middle East. Dear Joan is a touching account of how Tony's and Joan's love began with a chance wartime encounter and quickly blossomed through letters exchanged throughout the Second World War, across the miles that separated them."Article| Joan Charles, Tony Ross| Statement ..."
♥ Book Title : Properties of Light
☯ Full Synopsis : "A grand gothic novel of the outer reaches of passion -- of the body and of the mind -- PROPERTIES OF LIGHT is a mesmerizing tale of consuming love and murderous professional envy that carries the reader into the very heart of a physics problem so huge and perplexing it thwarted even Einstein: the nature of light. Caught in the entanglements of erotic and intellectual passion are three physicists: Samuel Mallach is a brilliant theoretician unhinged by the professional glory he feels has been stolen from him; Dana is his intriguing and gifted daughter, whose desperate devotion to her father contributes to the tragic undoing of Justin Childs, her lover and her father's protege. All three are working together to solve some of the deepest and most controversial problems in quantum mechanics, problems that challenge our understanding of the "real world" and of the nature of time. The book grapples with these elusive mysteries, but at its heart is a fiery love story of startling urgency. Insights into quantum mechanics and relativity theory are attached to the nerve fibers of human emotions, and these connections are alive with poignancy and pathos. For these characters, the passion to know and understand, like the desire for love, is full of terrible risk, holding out possibilities for heartbreak as well as for ecstasy. The true subject of Properties of Light is the ecstatic response to reality, perhaps the only response that can embrace the erotic and the poetic, the scientific and the spiritual. Written with, and about, a rare form of passion, this incandescent novel is fiction at its most daring and utterly original."Article| Rebecca Goldstein| Statement ..."

♥ Book Title : Journey to the End of the Night
☯ Full Synopsis : "The dark side of On the Road: instead of seeking kicks, the French narrator travels the globe to find an ever deeper disgust for life. Louis-Ferdinand Celine's revulsion and anger at what he considered the idiocy and hypocrisy of society explodes from nearly every page of this novel. Filled with slang and obscenities and written in raw, colloquial language, Journey to the End of the Night is a literary symphony of violence, cruelty and obscene nihilism. This book shocked most critics when it was first published in France in 1932, but quickly became a success with the reading public in Europe, and later in America where it was first published by New Directions in 1952. The story of the improbable yet convincingly described travels of the petit-bourgeois (and largely autobiographical) antihero, Bardamu, from the trenches of World War I, to the African jungle, to New York and Detroit, and finally to life as a failed doctor in Paris, takes the readers by the scruff and hurtles them toward the novel's inevitable, sad conclusion."Article| Louis-Ferdinand Céline| Statement ..."
