♥ Book Title : Earthlight
☯ Full Synopsis : "This “marvelous lunar espionage thriller” by the science fiction grandmaster and author of 2001: A Space Odyssey “packs plenty of punch” (SFReviews.net). Two hundred years after landing on the Moon, mankind has moved further out into the solar system. With permanent settlements now established on the Moon, Venus, and Mars, the inhabitants of these colonies have formed a political alliance called the Federation. On the Moon, a government agent from Earth is tracking a suspected spy at a prominent observatory. His mission is complicated by the rise in tensions between Earth’s government and the Federation over access to rare heavy metals. As the agent finds himself locked in a battle for life and death on the eerie, lunar landscape, the larger conflict explodes across space, leaving mankind’s future in doubt. First published in 1955, this suspense-filled space opera by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame inductee was a significant forerunner of television hits like Star Trek and The Expanse."Article| Arthur C. ☯ Full Synopsis : "The inscription was so large that Peter was able to make it out from a fair distance. ... The words seemed to give off their own light. In a whisper, which echoed in strange sibilants around him, he read: Commanders of Light and Darkness waged war within the womb. Corruption and vicious treachery then led one on to doom. But in the Great Halls of Draining Light, in a fortifying bower, The Sleepers weave dreams while invoking the revival of their power. The friend of the One through willow shower With silver concord protects his power. But the Commander of Darkness with vicious might By false claims of kinship asserts unjust right. When the Essence of Obsidian tries to explain this prophecy to Peter by describing the word "womb" as a poetic euphemism for the beginning, Peter's final quest for Earthlight only becomes more difficult and confusing. ♥ Book Title : A Study of the Earthlight on the Moon
☯ Full Synopsis : "The observational theoretical and empirical problems of determining the contribution of earthlight to the night-time illumination on the moon have been considered in detail. A photographic survey program to determine the absolute intensity of the earthlight portion of the moon is described. An empirical phase curve relating the mean magnitude difference between the earth and the sun has been derived from visual photometry measurements. The problems of predicting the albedo of the earth as well as predicting the mean albedo of specific location on the lunar surface are reviewed. Theoretical and empirical determinations of the photometric function of the lunar surface are discussed. Tables and graphs of relative surface brightness under earthlight are presented for a number of locations on the moon. These include information about nine APOLLO sites as well as locations every 5 deg. of longitude and latitude between plus or minus 50 deg. longitude and latitude. The tables are for zero libration. Although the tables and graphs have been compiled under simplifying assumptions; instructions for making the necessary corrections to specific situations are discussed."Article| D. ♥ Book Title : Earthlight, Wordfire
☯ Full Synopsis : ""Elizabeth Simpson has written this first comprehensive, book-length study of Ivan Doig's work for Doig fans as well as for scholars. While the central focus is Doig's work, Simpson also suggests new ways western writing can be examined in terms of folklore, history, landscape, and style. Well-known Doig novels including This House of Sky, Run with Me Mariah Montana, Winter Brothers, English Creek, and The Sea Runners are analyzed separately with attention to structure, narrative strategy, theme, character, pace, tone, and informing metaphors. Recurrent motifs that bind Doig's work into a canon are also explored. The reader is introduced to changes in folklore studies in the past few decades followed by an examination of the impact these changes have had on literature. Doig's use of folklore to develop character and theme, to regulate pace and tension, also allows him to paint the life of the region he is writing about. As well, Doig's use of folklore suggests ways to link the history of the West with a meaningful present. Doig's writing also emphasizes the interrelationships between landscape and the people who live in it." "In the second part of this study, Elizabeth Simpson addresses the concept of profane and sacred space and adversity as means that western writers use to perceive the relationship between character and landscape. The classic western myth of the solitary hero against the wilderness is not the focus of contemporary western writing where, instead, "community" takes on special meaning. One of the prevalant contemporary themes is the physical and psychological danger of isolation." "While individually Doig's books may differ from each other, they form a distinct corpus because the author's use of context informs the text. As Elizabeth Simpson concludes after examining Doig's style, "Doig is, in the most inclusive sense of the term, a regional writer: one who weaves the history, the landscape, the folklore, the language of his home place into stories that articulate major themes in American life.""--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. ♥ Book Title : In Earthlight
☯ Full Synopsis : "Poetry. Poets as different from each other as Ted Hughes, George Oppen and Jeff Nuttall have expressed admiration for Jonathan Griffin's work. According to the American poet and critic Eliot Weinberger, Griffin is "perhaps the finest unknown poet in our language. His is a poetry of planetary consciousness--the poet's response both ecstasy and rage. The intense lyrics in celebration of natural beauty - some of the loveliest in the language - are almost eclipsed by the bleak and apocalyptic meditations. Griffin is one of the few poets writing today who is confronting, in the poem, this earth of pesticides, deforestation, chemical waste.""Article| Jonathan Griffin| Statement ..."
