☯ Full Synopsis : "The main findings of surveys of 3,700 manufacturing firms in Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand. The papers, presented at a conference in Bangkok in early 1999, compare the effect of the 1997-99 crisis on various countries, sectors, and types of firms, in terms of output, exports, and employment. ☯ Full Synopsis : "January 2001 This rich new database on 4,000 Asian firms--operating in Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand--focuses on the impact of Asia's economic crisis and on the longer-run determinants of productivity, employment practices, and financial structure. Researchers have decried the limited supply of objective, comparable firm-level data from developing countries. Hallward-Driemeier describes a new database that helps fill this information gap. The database has detailed records on 4,000 firms operating in Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand. A comparable survey instrument and sampling methodology was used in each country, and all five studies were carried out simultaneously. The data cover three years (1996-98), allowing for measurements of firm performance before and immediately after the East Asian financial crisis. The questionnaire focused on measuring the impact of the regional financial crisis at the microeconomic level and understanding the longer-run determinants of productivity, employment practices, and financial structure. This database--the first step in the important Firm Analysis and Competitiveness Surveys initiative that the World Bank is spearheading--will be joined by additional country databases. The aim is to fill the gap in much-needed microeconomic evidence using comparable instruments. This paper--a product of Macroeconomics and Growth, Development Research Group--is part of a larger effort in the group to collect comparable firm-level information from developing countries. The research was funded by the Bank's Research Support Budget under the research project "Impact of the East Asian Crisis" (RPO 632-28). ☯ Full Synopsis : "This is a complete guide to the pricing and risk management of convertible bond portfolios. Convertible bonds can be complex because they have both equity and debt like features and new market entrants will usually find that they have either a knowledge of fixed income mathematics or of equity derivatives and therefore have no idea how to incorporate credit and equity together into their existing pricing tools. Part I of the book covers the impact that the 2008 credit crunch has had on the markets, it then shows how to build up a convertible bond and introduces the reader to the traditional convertible vocabulary of yield to put, premium, conversion ratio, delta, gamma, vega and parity. The market of stock borrowing and lending will also be covered in detail. Using an intuitive approach based on the Jensen inequality, the authors will also show the advantages of using a hybrid to add value - pre 2008, many investors labelled convertible bonds as 'investing with no downside', there are of course plenty of 2008 examples to prove that they were wrong. The authors then go onto give a complete explanation of the different features that can be embedded in convertible bond. Part II shows readers how to price convertibles. It covers the different parameters used in valuation models: credit spreads, volatility, interest rates and borrow fees and Maturity. Part III covers investment strategies for equity, fixed income and hedge fund investors and includes dynamic hedging and convertible arbitrage. Part IV explains the all important risk management part of the process in detail. This is a highly practical book, all products priced are real world examples and numerical examples are not limited to hypothetical convertibles. It is a must read for anyone wanting to safely get into this highly liquid, high return market."Article| Jan De Spiegeleer, Wim Schoutens| Statement ..."

☯ Full Synopsis : "Strategic management is the central activity of all successful organizations today. From the time when its conceptual foundations were laid in the 1960s, its theory and practice have been subjected to intensive research, argument and development under such headings as general management, business policy, corporate strategy and long-range planning. But, as J. I. Moore explains, no matter what its name, strategic thinking has always addressed the same issue: 'the determination of how an organization, in its entirety, can best be directed in a changing world'."Article| J I Moore| Statement ..."

☯ Full Synopsis : "This paper analyzes the determinants of the recovery ratios and survival times (time until default) for U. S. corporate bonds. We show that seniority, the type of industry in which the firm operates, and the type of restructuring attempted after default are the major determinants of the cross-sectional distribution of individual bond recovery ratios. On an industry level, physical asset obsolescence, industry growth, and industry concentration are the most important factors. We also analyze survival times for corporate bonds and find that initial time to maturity and the general economic conditions at maturity and default explain a large fraction of the cross-sectional variation of survival times."Article| Ivailo Izvorski| Statement ..."

☯ Full Synopsis : "First published in 1989, this book is based on detailed comparative case studies of eight firms’ responses to the recession of the early 1980s, the worst crisis for British manufacturing in the post-war period. Following these companies’ progress from 1979 to 1985, Whittington examines the various recession strategies they adopted and the consequences of these for management change and financial performance in the recovery. Drawing on the Realist social theory of Roy Bhaskar, Whittington argues that the class, gender, generation and ethnicity of the decision-makers involved in the eight case studies collectively made an impact on their strategic choices. This is a timely and practical reissue, which will be of value to students, managers and academics concerned with strategic management, developments in organizational theory, and the current economic climate."Article| Richard Whittington| Statement ..."
