☯ Full Synopsis : "In this classic work, Max Weber, one of the founders of modern social science and the man characterized by Karl Jaspers as the philosopher of his age, presents one of the most influential theories of urban life and development. For the modern reader, the study provides a perspective that brings greater understanding and dimension to today's urban problems--housing, transportation, overcrowding, and social disorganization. Weber saw the city as a balanced, self-restoring system of institutions that has played a basic role in the development of Western civlization. He discussses the origins of cities, and proceeds to show how and why this new way of urban life was fully developed. Here is a work enlightened by keen insight and intellectual vigor--from back cover"Article| Max Weber| Statement ..."

☯ Full Synopsis : "The history of healthcare in Jersey City dates back to the early nineteenth century, when the city operated a variety of public facilities for the poor. Jersey City Medical Center was originally located in a part of the city called Paulus Hook and was known as the Jersey City Charity Hospital. The hospital gradually stopped accepting charity patients and, in 1885, dropped the word "charity" from its name. When Mayor Frank Hague began an aggressive building campaign with the help of federal funds, an average city hospital was transformed into a comprehensive medical facility. On October 2, 1936, President Franklin D. Roosevelt laid the cornerstone of Jersey City Medical Center's new building at McGinley Square. Today the medical center is located near Grand Street and Jersey Avenue. Jersey City Medical Center traces the institution's history through its various transformations, ending in 2004, when its remaining two hundred patients were transferred to the new facility. This book is a tribute to the passing of an era."Article| Leonard F. Vernon| Statement ..."

☯ Full Synopsis : "Throughout his distinguished and influential career, David Harvey has defined and redefined the relationship between politics, capitalism, and the social aspects of geographical theory. Laying out Harvey's position that geography could not remain objective in the face of urban poverty and associated ills, Social Justice and the City is perhaps the most widely cited work in the field. Harvey analyzes core issues in city planning and policy--employment and housing location, zoning, transport costs, concentrations of poverty--asking in each case about the relationship between social justice and space. How, for example, do built-in assumptions about planning reinforce existing distributions of income? Rather than leading him to liberal, technocratic solutions, Harvey's line of inquiry pushes him in the direction of a "revolutionary geography," one that transcends the structural limitations of existing approaches to space. Harvey's emphasis on rigorous thought and theoretical innovation gives the volume an enduring appeal. This is a book that raises big questions, and for that reason geographers and other social scientists regularly return to it."Article| David Harvey| Statement ..."

☯ Full Synopsis : "The classic work on the evaluation of city form. What does the city's form actually mean to the people who live there? What can the city planner do to make the city's image more vivid and memorable to the city dweller? To answer these questions, Mr. Lynch, supported by studies of Los Angeles, Boston, and Jersey City, formulates a new criterion--imageability--and shows its potential value as a guide for the building and rebuilding of cities. The wide scope of this study leads to an original and vital method for the evaluation of city form. The architect, the planner, and certainly the city dweller will all want to read this book."Article| Kevin Lynch| Statement ..."
