♥ Book Title : Culture and Management in the Americas
☯ Full Synopsis : "Latin Americans are culturally different from North Americans in ways that so far have been inaccurately portrayed in the management literature. In Culture and Management in the Americas, Alfredo Behrens argues that these differences merit a substantial overhaul of management theory and practice to make the best of the significantly untapped Latin American potential for creativity, innovation, and teamwork. This applies in organizations with North American ownership and management, whether they are based in the U.S. or Latin America. Behrens, a management consultant and academic who has studied, taught, and practiced in South and North America and Europe, explains why the use of traditional North American research methods to capture cultural traits in the multi-cultural workforce is inappropriate. This practice produces a false picture of the cultural attributes and capabilities of Latin American managers and key staff. And this, in turn, leads to serious shortcomings in the development of appropriate motivation and leadership strategies and of appraisal and control instruments. Rather than relying on standardized surveys for measuring cultural attributes to underpin and develop such strategies and tools, the author suggests that managers look to the arts—particularly literature and cinema—for a richer and more useful alternative. He illustrates his points by reference to literary icons such as Argentina's Martin Fierro, Brazil's Macunaima, and America's Captain Ahab. He uses a variety of case studies to demonstrate what we can learn from these iconographic characters and what we can expect of each other when we apply these lessons—whether we are leading, following, or working in self-directed teams. This readable and enjoyable book will be an invaluable, engaging, and practical tool for anyone charged with managing at any level in workforce that combines both North American and Latin American cultures."Article| Alfredo Behrens| Statement ..."
♥ Book Title : Vanguardia Y Humorismo Gráfico en Crisis
☯ Full Synopsis : "The book studies the relation between the avant-garde and graphic humour in two critical historical periods: the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) and the early years of the Cuban Revolution (1959-1961). It focuses on the so-called war magazines in Spain on the Republican side (No Veas, Trincheras, and LEsquella de la Torratxa, among others) and the Francoist side (Vértice and La Ametralladora). In the part devoted to Cuba, the analysis covers the newspaper Revolución and the avant-garde humour magazine El Pitirre, which ran simultaneously to the cultural supplement Lunes de Revolución and shared the same fate when Lunes and El Pitirre were closed down in 1961. The book unveils the trajectory of the avant-garde graphic humour in both periods, when the political commitment progressively overshadowed the development of the aesthetic avant-garde. The special socio-political conjuncture posed ideological and aesthetic-conceptual challenges to graphic artists, establishing contact areas and influences between Spain and Cuba."Article| Jorge L. ♥ Book Title : Culture of Class
☯ Full Synopsis : "Major change came to Argentina during the first decades of the twentieth century. Following the mass influx of European immigrants to the country during the beginning of the century, a truly national culture was produced through mass media, facilitating the assimilation of immigrants and their descendants. New forms of media emerged, such as radio and cinema, as did new forms of entertainment, such as tango songs, films, and radio theater. Yet despite the unifying effect of popular culture, the nation remained divided, and, if anything, more so in 1950 than in 1910. This book argues that the key to understanding this paradox lies in a reassessment of the mass culture of the 1920s and 1930s. With a focus on film and radio in and around Buenos Aires, the locus of production as well as much of the market consumption, Karush shows how integration and class fractures occurred simultaneously in a short span of the country's history. He brings together the usually separated subjects of radio and cinema to show how they can combine to gauge a larger cultural and political environment and shed light on class distinctions. The book contributes to an ongoing discussion of the relationship between power and mass culture. It will be of interest to scholars of cultural history and urban studies and those interested in Latin American history and culture."Article| Matthew B. Karush| Statement ..."
El presente libro se propone saldar esa deuda, rastreando sus huellas en la prensa (Caras y Caretas), en el sainete o genero chico criollo, y en la considerada 'alta literatura'"--Publisher's website The Galicians of Spain's Galicia (a designation which ended up being used to describe all of the inhabitants of Spain), traverse Argentina's history. However, despite their enormous demographic and cultural impact, there are not many specific studies regarding their representation in the collective imagination of Argentina. This book attempts to address this deficit, researching their depiction in the press (as in Faces and Masks magazine), in farces, Argentine drama, popular theater, and in "scholarly literature""Article| Marina Guidotti de Sánchez| Statement ..."

♥ Book Title : The Spanish Lake
☯ Full Synopsis : "This work is a history of the Pacific, the ocean that became a theatre of power and conflict shaped by the politics of Europe and the economic background of Spanish America.
