♥ Book Title : Angela Carter
☯ Full Synopsis : "Although much of Carter's work is considered part of the contemporary canon, its true strangeness is still only partially understood. Lorna Sage argues that one key to a better understanding of Carter's writings is the extraordinary intelligence with which she read the cultural signs of our times. From structuralism and the study of folk tales in the 1960s to fairy stories, gender politics and the theoretical 'pleasure of the text', which she makes so real in her writing. Carter legitimised the life of fantasy and celebrated the fertility of the female imagination more than any other writer. Lorna Sage's authoritative study explores the roots of Carter's originality, covering all her novels as well as some short stories and non-fiction."Article| Lorna Sage| Statement ..."

♥ Book Title : Black Venus
☯ Full Synopsis : "Extraordinary and diverse people inhabit this rich, ripe, occasionally raucous collection of short stories. Some are based on real people - Jeanne Duval, Baudelaire's handsome and reluctant muse who never asked to be called the Black Venus, trapped in the terminal ennui of the poet's passion, snatching at a little lifesaving respectability against all odds...Edgar Allen Poe, with his face of a actor, demonstrating in every thought and deed how right his friends were when they said 'No man is safe who drinks before breakfast.' And some of these people are totally imaginary. Such as the seventeenth century whore, transported to Virginia for thieving, who turns into a good woman in spite of herself among the Indians, who have nothing worth stealing. And a girl, suckled by wolves, strange and indifferent as nature, who will not tolerate returning to humanity. Angela Carter wonderfully mingles history, fiction, invention, literary criticism, high drama and low comedy in a glorious collection of stories as full of contradictions and surprises as life itself."Article| Angela Carter| Statement ..."
♥ Book Title : Heterotopia in Angela Carter’s Fiction: Worlds in Collision
☯ Full Synopsis : "Angela Carter’s work is a collage of discourses and genres. The challenge of finding a critical framework, complex and accurate enough to classify her work, has remained. The spectacular and the pragmatic threads of her texts, framed by extreme seriousness and witty humour are unravelled with the help of a different metaphor, denoting enigmatic spaces, conterdiscourses, borders of otherness – heterotopia. Five novels out of nine, five short stories out of thirty-five, as well as Carter’s two film adaptations are filtered through a term extricated from its medical and geographical roots, which emphasizes the ambiguity, as well as the dialogic interaction of Angela Carter’s often discordant discourses that have kept her at the top of the literary canon."Article| Eliza Claudia Filimon| Statement ..."

♥ Book Title : Role-Breaking and Role-Remaking in Angela Carter's the Bloody Chamber
☯ Full Synopsis : "Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1, Otto-von-Guericke-University Magdeburg (Institut fur fremdsprachliche Philologien), course: Gothic Fiction, language: English, abstract: The attainment of female subjectivity in spite of female sexual maturation, the oppression of female sexuality, the passive role of females bound in the confines of marriage, and as accumulated property are some of the issues that Carter addresses in The Bloody Chamber within the framework of the fairytale genre. Angela Carter adopts Perrault's fairy-tale Bluebeard in her story The Bloody Chamber and transfers it into a feminist rewriting. She breaks through the prescribed role-understanding of women and men in society. Society defines women as being passive, men as being active in every domain of the everyday life. Angela Carter draws a picture against this stigmatization. She does not define women as being merely subversive; victims of male authority and simply fulfilling their role. She wants to show that women have the ability to gain independence and a free will by giving male qualities to her female characters or letting them not behave like society expects them to behave. In society men are said to be powerful and oppressing their wives. They show true qualities of masculinity and exploit their wife's innocence and naivety. Carter on the one hand portrays men as embodying this prescribed role, but also adds female qualities to their actions and behaviours, or being overpowered by their female counterparts. This paper shall show in how far Angela Carter adapts constructed role models, changes them or invents new ones. Therefore the paper is divided into two sections: The first gives a brief overview about the time period as this text is written against the background of the gothic era. The second part concentrates on The Bloody Chamber, which is first of all based on Perrault's Bluebeard story - to realize the"Article| Sabrina Zabel| Statement ..."

♥ Book Title : Women in the 1960s: Angela Carter’s The Magic Toyshop
☯ Full Synopsis : "In 1967, Angela Carter published a novel about an adolescent female protagonist growing up in a patriarchal system. Published at a moment in history when significant change, not only for women, but all of the western world was about to take place, The Magic Toyshop illuminates the metamorphosing social dynamics. Angela Carter sensed this moment but did not know where it was going to lead and what it would offer women. Guiding the reader through these pending seismic changes is Melanie, the novel's protagonist. As opposed to the other female characters of the novel who occupy only a fixed role suiting patriarchal hierarchy, Melanie is constantly shifting roles. She can be read as representative of the rebelling female, challenging patriarchal order. Melanie realises that none of the potential roles society offers women will satisfy her. In the end, she has the chance to enter a new world and a relationship defined by equality."Article| Annemarie Kunz| Statement ..."
