♥ Book Title : A case study on "Four Star Industries Singapore: Matching Supply"
☯ Full Synopsis : "Bachelor Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: A, University of Cambridge, course: Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, language: English, abstract: The study is being conducted on the issues and problems that were faced by the Five Star Industries Private Limited, a famous mattress brand which had been suffering from heavy losses owing to the company’s sales falling and competition penetrating the market, with continuously increasing day by day. The company came into being in 1966 when a carpenter and his wife took the initiative and formed this company to produce spring mattresses. In order to produce the mattresses, Gim Sin the carpenter purchased sophisticated machinery owing to the machines high productivity and quality. However, with time, the intensity of the competition I the mattress producing industry increased and the company had to suffer from the problems of local mattress producers dominating the mattress market and thus forced the company t take corrective action. The company was highly affected since it was heavily dependent on the local dealers who now penetrated the market with their own production of mattresses. However, the company attempted to do this by increasing its product range and service level. Although the action was to improve the company’s condition, yet it further deteriorated the company’s position since the variety of product ranges which now resided in their portfolio became difficult for them to manage since the increased variety slowed the mattress production. The act of thus matching the demand with the supply of these variety of mattresses became a problem for the company and thus led to the company facing order fulfillment problems since the wide variety of products produced and the orders of these various mattresses put a heavy pressure on the company’s manufacturing operations and created difficulties in production scheduling in turn. This pressure o the manufacturing sector of the business and the problems faced by the company instigated a fear in Gim Sin of employees leaving the organization since their job has been toughening day by day due to the introduction of this wide variety of products."Article| Richards Macdonald| Statement ..."

♥ Book Title : The Successful Investor Today
☯ Full Synopsis : "What does it take to achieve superior performance and become a successful investor? Rather than great stock pricing or market timing skills, it is far better for you to understand how the markets work and how to make them work best for you. Larry E. Swedroe argues that the right strategy never changes, no matter whether the bull is stampeding or the bear has emerged from hibernation. The Successful Investor Today was written during one of the greatest bear markets of the post-World War II era--a bear market that was a result of the inevitable bursting of the technology-led bubble of the late 1990s (what Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan called "irrational exuberance"). Although millions of investors unnecessarily incurred trillions of dollars in losses, neither this bubble, nor the ensuing devastating losses, were anything new. Despite all the horrible investment experiences that have been reported, those investors who followed the fourteen simple truths outlined in this book--including the building of globally diversified portfolios-did not suffer the devastating losses experienced by many others. The fourteen simple truths withstand the tests of logic and time in the way the stock market really works, rather than the way Wall Street and the media would have you believe it works. Since it is generally held that those who fail to plan, plan to fail, an investor must begin with an investment plan. Your plan should be tailored to conform to your unique ability, willingness, and need to take risk. In The Successful Investor Today, you will learn how to build, write, implement, and manage your investment plan over time. This book will help you become a better and more informed investor, and it will help you achieve your financial goals by gradually increasing your wealth. Apart from offering an up-to-date winning strategy, The Successful Investor Today presents an efficient and proven way to avoid the most common--and costly--mistakes investors continue to make."Article| Larry E. ♥ Book Title : Handbook of Nature Study
☯ Full Synopsis : "NATURE-STUDY is, despite all discussions and perversions, a study of nature; it consists of simple, truthful observations that may, like beads on a string, finally be threaded upon the understanding and thus held together as a logical and harmonious whole. Therefore, the object of the nature-study teacher should be to cultivate in the children powers of accurate observation and to build up within them, understanding. FIRST, but not most important, nature-study gives the child practical and helpful knowledge. It makes him familiar with nature’s ways and forces, so that he is not so helpless in the presence of natural misfortune and disasters. Nature-study cultivates the child’s imagination since there are so many wonderful and true stories that he may read with his own eyes, which affect his imagination as much as does fairy lore; at the same time nature-study cultivates in him a perception and a regard for what is true, and the power to express it. All things seem possible in nature; yet this seeming is always guarded by the eager quest of what is true. Perhaps, half the falsehood in the world is due to lack of power to detect the truth and to express it. Nature-study aids both in discernment and expression of things as they are. Nature-study cultivates in the child a love of the beautiful; it brings to him early a perception of color, form and music. He sees whatever there is in his environment, whether it be the thunder-head piled up in the western sky, or the golden flash of the oriole in the elm; whether it be the purple of the shadows on the snow, or the azure glint on the wing of the little butterfly. Also, what there is of sound, he hears; he reads the music score of the bird orchestra, separating each part and knowing which bird sings it. And the patter of the rain, the gurgle of the brook, the sighing of the wind in the pine, he notes and loves and becomes enriched thereby. But, more than all, nature-study gives the child a sense of companionship with life out of doors and an abiding love of nature. Let this latter be the teacher’s criterion for judging his or her work. If nature-study as taught does not make the child love nature and the out-of-doors, then it should cease. Let us not inflict permanent injury on the child by turning him away from nature instead of toward it. However, if the love of nature is in the teacher’s heart, there is no danger; such a teacher, no matter by what method, takes the child gently by the hand and walks with him in paths that lead to the seeing and comprehending of what he may find beneath his feet or above his head. And these paths whether they lead among the lowliest plants, or whether to the stars, finally converge and bring the wanderer to that serene peace and hopeful faith that is the sure inheritance of all those who realize fully that they are working units of this wonderful universe."Article| Anna Botsford Comstock | Statement ..."

♥ Book Title : Civil-Military Relations and Shared Responsibility
☯ Full Synopsis : "Dale R. Herspring considers the factors that allow some civilian and military organizations to operate more productively in a political context than others, bringing into comparative study for the first time the military organizations of the U.S., Russia, Germany, and Canada. Refuting the work of scholars such as Samuel P. Huntington and Michael C. Desch, Civil-Military Relations and Shared Responsibility approaches civil-military relations from a new angle, military culture, arguing that the optimal form of civil-military relations is one of shared responsibility between the two groups. Herspring outlines eight factors that contribute to conditions that promote and support shared responsibility among civilian officials and the military, including such prerequisites as civilian leaders not interfering in the military's promotion process and civilian respect for military symbols and traditions. He uses these indicators in his comparative treatment of the U.S., Russian, German, and Canadian militaries. Civilian authorities are always in charge and the decision on how to treat the military is a civilian decision. However, Herspring argues, failure by civilians to respect military culture will antagonize senior military officials, who will feel less free to express their views, thus depriving senior civilian officials, most of whom have no military experience, of the expert advice of those most capable of assessing the far-reaching forms of violence. This issue of civilian respect for military culture and operations plays out in Herspring's country case studies. Scholars of civil-military relations will find much to debate in Herspring's framework, while students of civil-military and defense policy will appreciate Herspring's brief historical tour of each countries' post–World War II political and policy landscapes. -- Zoltan Barany, author of The Soldier and the Changing State: Building Democratic Armies in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas"Article| Dale R. ♥ Book Title : Imitations of Life
☯ Full Synopsis : "This collection of important essays examines melodrama from a variety of perspectives-chronological, theoretical, international, and feminist."Article| Marcia Landy| Statement ..."
♥ Book Title : Imitation of Life
☯ Full Synopsis : "Douglas Sirk (Claus Detler Sierck) was born in Hamburg, Germany, in 1900. He made nine films before fleeing Nazi Germany, eventually coming to America. His best-known films, made during the 1950s--all of them melodramas--were "Magnificent Obsession," "All That Heaven Allows," "The Tarnished Angels," "Written on the Wind," and "Imitation of Life" (made in 1958, released in 1959). Because of the special stamp he put on his melodramas, Sirk's best works transcend the constraints of their genre. In them, he both exemplified and critiqued postwar, conservative, materialistic life and its false value systems. There is much in Sirk, particularly in "Imitation of Life," that is of interest to us today. The time seems to be right for a new look at the film, its reception amidst scandal over the affairs of its star--Lana Turner--the relationships between its mothers and daughters, the tensions between its men and its women, the friendships between its black and white women, and the ambiguous, controversial approach of Sirk to his material. This volume includes the complete continuity script of the film, critical commentary and published reviews, interviews with the director, and a filmography and bibliography. It also includes an excellent introduction by Lucy Fischer."Article| Douglas Sirk, Lucy Fischer| Statement ..."
